Elliott Smith would have been forty years old today. One can only imagine what music he might have produced if things had gone differently, if he had not died in Los Angeles less than six years ago. That he was ill at ease with his time on this planet surely lead to his premature end, but it also infused his music with a beautiful yearning and sadness that so many connected with.
His sixth and final album “From a Basement on a Hill” was a collection of songs partially completed upon his untimely but not unexpected demise. It is as fitting a tribute as one could hope for in such circumstances.
The above is a video of Smith interpreting what I believe to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written, “Waterloo Sunset” by Ray Davies of The Kinks.
