Brendan Mullen died yesterday. He had just celebrated his 60th birthday with longtime girlfriend Kateri. During his lifetime the Scottish born music fan and author changed the Los Angeles musical landscape like few others have. In the seventies he created a dingy basement club in Hollywood called the Masque which singularly gave rise to the influential Los Angeles punk scene. In the eighties he booked several clubs around Los Angeles that nurtured bands which are now international stars. But more than all of that Brendan was a gentle intelligent friend who made this city a better place to live in – and he will be missed.
You can watch Brendan’s genius explaination of punk music here. (at 30 sec)

He championed Danny Cohen and the Charleston Grotto like no other. He also turned me onto Sun Ra’s “Nuclear War.”
