Tom Waits On-Sale Information - WITH EUROPEAN DATES

As you all know, Tom Waits is going on tour from Phoenix to Hotlanta this summer. Aside from the guiding forces from above, Tom further explained the routing choice by saying: “We’re going to the deep south where they still love a man who wears red pants and they make him feel welcome.”

Waits will be touring with longtime musical ally Larry Taylor (bass), Omar Torrez (guitar), Patrick Warren (keyboards), Casey Waits (drums and percussion) and as yet named reed player; performing hollers, mambos and rhumbas.

As on his last tour, Waits’ U.S. booking agent and longtime tour director, Stuart Ross, has spent a great deal of effort to fight ticket scalpers. Along with Ticketmaster, he has worked out a plan he believes will make sure every fan pays face value (plus normal service and handling fees) for the tickets purchased for the “Glitter and Doom” tour, outlined thusly:

“In keeping with Waits’ longtime desire to allow fans the best possible access to his shows, the Waits’ organization is again implementing an anti-scalping program to assure patrons that their tickets can only be purchased at face value (plus normal surcharges and handling fees). At the majority of shows on this tour, Ticketmaster is introducing their Paperless Ticket™ system. Prior to entering the venue, fans must simply provide their credit card which was used to purchase the tickets, along with a government issued ID. The fan’s accompanying guest must be present at that time. An attendant will swipe the credit card and provide a receipt for the transaction. The entire process is quick, secure and simple. Tickets will only be sold via the internet and by phone and are limited to two per person.”

Tickets for all markets are due to go on sale Friday, May 16th. Check local venues and Ticketmaster for specific start times. Tickets will be available via the internet and by phone.

i have been getting an INSANE amount of calls about this- PATIENCE!!!!!!!! :)

  • 4 GunStreetGirl // May 8, 2008 at 8:46 am

This is awful, the ticketmaster idea.
I don’t have or use credit cards, like many people
my age who’ve gotten themselves into debts over the years.
And when a friend decides to BUY IT FOR MY BIRTHDAY
it puts all sorts of complications on me [on my birthday!]
to figure out how to make it into the venue at all
[without said friend by my side].
Awful. This is the most awful system that could happen, for me. :[

  • 5 Jo // May 8, 2008 at 9:20 am

I just hope it works. Every time he comes to town, I never get tickets. Last time I hit ‘buy tickets’ at 10am on the dot and it still sold out.

  • 6 Tom // May 8, 2008 at 9:21 am

I emailed the Friends of the Orpheum Theatre
on Tuesday and just got a response:

My understanding is that tickets will go on sale at
    http://www.ticketmaster.com beginning Saturday, May 17.
Limit of 2 tickets per credit card.

    >
    > When do tickets go on sale? They’re scheduled for June 17th and 18th.
    > I’m coming from Boulder, Colorado.
    >
    > Thanks.

  • 7 Gina // May 8, 2008 at 9:32 am

I’m sorry it doesn’t work for you, but I’m sure this is the most effective solution the Waits’ tour manager was able to devise to combat scalping…

  • 8 Tom // May 8, 2008 at 9:44 am

Just wanted to add… I wouldn’t just bank on what the woman said at the Orpheum- I will as I’m sure you will be checking this on an hourly basis.
Quite often we know what’s up before they do. We obviously are more persistent and have more at stake.

  • 9 Andre // May 8, 2008 at 9:46 am

Does anyone know the price-range for tickets? I’ve been hearing some pretty expensive rumors.

  • 10 steve // May 8, 2008 at 9:49 am

this is HANDS DOWN the most effective way of bypassing asshole ticket scalpers and getting the tickets into the hands of the fans. i REALLY don’t want to sound like a jerk about this, but i’m a pathetic 25 year old college student who hasn’t held a job in 4 years and I STILL have a credit card that i can use on rare occasions such as this. i love the past, but it’s 2008 and this is ultimately the most financially viable and fan friendly way of obtaining a ticket. this system COMPLETELY eliminates the middle man and ONLY people who want to see tom (and NOT those who simply want to profit off of him) will get the chance. its completely brilliant and a fantastic system. ticketmaster can go to hell, along with all the other jerks who have made a living off of ripping off fans of music for their own personal greed.

  • 11 larry // May 8, 2008 at 10:09 am

I really would like to get two tickets for the Phoenix show. I also will be at my computer next Friday morning.

  • 12 Peter Gaynor // May 8, 2008 at 10:31 am

What if you don’t have a credit card?

  • 13 BMB // May 8, 2008 at 12:37 pm

    **********************

If you don’t have a credit card can’t you get a DEBIT CARD if you have a checking or savings account at a bank? It just has to have a Visa or Mastercard logo on it (I think) if you want to use it to buy online. Check it out. Call your bank.

If that doesn’t work and if the theater is in your town, go hang around before showtime and see if someone has an extra ticket for face value. Many TW fans are good for selling at face value.

    ***********************

  • 14 BMB // May 8, 2008 at 12:42 pm

    +++++++

Are all the venues using Ticketmaster, or are there local, legitimate, ticket agencies other than Ticketmaster that we can use, or must use?

    +++++++

  • 15 frank's wild years // May 8, 2008 at 5:22 pm

What gives with the early morning shows? I am up for Tom Waits at any point in the day but I tend to sleep in when I can. I guess I’ll have to set my alarm. Jeez. Rock on Tulsa!

  • 16 BMB // May 8, 2008 at 5:51 pm

FWY’s, those are not times for the shows. Those are times for the ticket sales. Or is that what you meant, 10a.m. is too early to buy a ticket?

Or are you just being fun?

  • 17 Barb // May 8, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Thank you so much for the ticket information. Now I just have to pray hard that I can get them. My husband is such a long time fan-this would really be a dream come true to see him live

  • 19 Nikki // May 9, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Thanks for posting this info. I was worried I would miss something on when the tickets went on sale. So glad to see him live finally!

  • 20 Gin Soaked Boy // May 9, 2008 at 6:10 pm

Is this what Waits meant by “passin’ out wolf tickets”? I’m hopeful to get one ticket and do the road trip (from Denver) to either El Paso or Tulsa. Just wondering what might be the size of the fan base in either of those cities. In other words, what are my chances of scoring just one for either venue.

In 20 years of following Waits on the “inebriated stroll”, the only shot of seeing him fell by the wayside while I was moving back to Denver from Orlando in ‘99 and was misinformed about the Paramount shows. I hope this is not my last chance…

  • 21 Maxwell // May 9, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Wait until you get no tickets during the onsale and see the prices on ebay/stubhub. By them implementing this system fans will pay even more for their tickets if they don’t get them during the onsale. Good luck but the vast majority of fans won’t be seeing Tom Waits this go around either. Once again Ticketmaster’s monoply has screwed fans.

  • 22 Rando // May 9, 2008 at 6:45 pm

I gotta zillion cards, but do I have the POWER to break through? Considering the trailer I just saw, and the fact that FZ is still apparently dead, I’ll attempt to endure. Take me with you, don’t you want any of THESE?

  • 23 Rimas Danaitis // May 9, 2008 at 6:49 pm

We also like a man who wears red pants (or any other color he has a passion for) and we certainly will make him welcome here! When is Tom coming to Toronto, Canada?

  • 24 akadannyboy // May 9, 2008 at 6:50 pm

this ticket scheme is great, scalpers had at least half
the Asheville and Akron tickets last year before the rest of us had a chance, ticketbastard is bad enough, scalpers are scum. Thanks Tommy boy for cutting out the too many middlemen. wish the dollar was stronger for a mule ride to europe

  • 25 akadannyboy // May 9, 2008 at 7:07 pm

You aren’t a scalper are you Maxwell? I don’t see how stubhub can lay hands on tix that don’t exist, I hope you’re wrong, now I’m starting to fret, don’t get me all paranoid

  • 26 Thomas // May 9, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Maxwell has no clue about what he’s talking about.

Is Tom really coming to Europe…. he mentioned Dublin? :)

  • 34 mAREK // May 10, 2008 at 3:30 am

Tom, if you think your big in Japan - this broken off sunburnt land Australia has been a calling - these masses of distant voices can’t wait to be answered with a tour or a visit to local BBQ’s. Be nice to have you around for awhile. What dont you drink? -

  • 35 Garry // May 10, 2008 at 3:57 am

I kind of like the ticketmaster idea (even though i detest ticketmaster). But i would love to also have the ticket as a souvenir to show the grand kids that i got to see old man Waits.
I hope that they do something like this for Europe, as i think it has been 25 years since tom was in Ireland.
Given that i couldn’t get a U2 ticket a few years ago from about 160,000 tickets after getting hrough 2 minutes after going on sale, i have almost given up hope on Mr Waits already.
    Fingers and toes crossed though.

  • 36 Garry // May 10, 2008 at 4:03 am

Any chance we could bring back the “queue around the corner at the gig” system for Tom Waits. Oops the gig in Ireland is late July, the queue is probably already full.

  • 37 Waits in London? // May 10, 2008 at 4:04 am

Wow BIG news, especially for us European fans whom havent seen Waits our way since 2004, any idea when the European dates will be issued?

I hope he’s coming to London, but having said that I will be happy to travel anywhere in Europe to catch him in action, infact it would even be a good excuse for a last minute trip over the pond, but London would be just fine.

  • 38 Francesca // May 10, 2008 at 4:13 am

what is the deal with stbhub… do they or do they not have tickets. how did they get them. i too will be at my computer friday next for columbus, (if that is the time, i havenet seen anything that says it for sure) columbus will be drawng a huge base area. i am hopefull though, I managed to get Dalhi Lama tickets in Bethlehe PA after much searching. those tickets sold in 20 minutes thru ticketbastard. what will be will be, but i want to go too…

  • 41 Janie // May 10, 2008 at 5:19 am

Last and only time I saw Tom Waits was an outstanding show in Eugene, Oregon in 2000. Tickets were $60 then and worth every penny. Wonder how much they’ll be this go-around. Add that to the cost of a ticket to Birmingham, plus a hotel. If I can get a ticket, I’m there. I love you that much, Tom.

  • 42 Big Head Ed // May 10, 2008 at 5:29 am

I’ve seen Tom 4 times now. 1975 solo at a local College, 1976 at an old fashioned coffee house type venue, 1977 at The Academy of Music in Philadelphia, and not again until 2006 in Akron. I plan on getting tickets to the show in Columbus this time. The show in Akron was well worth the 8 hour each way drive and additional cost of a Hotel room. One of the best shows of my life. I wish everyone luck in getting tickets. Sorry for those without credit cards but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Frito Lay gave Tom the luxury of not having to hit the road on a solid grind to make a living, but hopefully that has also contributed to the quality of his work since so few have the chance to see him now.

  • 43 jose luis // May 10, 2008 at 6:03 am

LISBON is likely the best place to start the European Tour! :)

I hope Tom Waits will show up in Poland some day!!!

  • 45 ab // May 10, 2008 at 8:05 am

this system of no tickets worked so well for led zeppelin didn’t it? i didn’t see anyone pay less than $1000 on ebay. if they are easily available everyone will pay less. they are harder to get hold of therefore worth more. think about it!

  • 46 Paulo // May 10, 2008 at 8:24 am

  • 48 stuart // May 10, 2008 at 8:43 am

will you make it to Barcelona this time round?

  • 49 coyotl666 // May 10, 2008 at 8:46 am

    just two comments:

if you don’t have a credit card you can get a pre-paid credit card, or a gift debit card (usually through a bank). both of these are cards (usually visa, sometimes maybe mastercard) in various prepaid amounts designed for just this circumstance: paying for online purchases if you’ve either no card or no offline option (or if you just don’t want the illegal vics showing up on your statement. you can get something like a $200 card for maybe $8 - check out local banks or the visa website. not cheap, but an option.

and another thing: stubhub doesn’t have tickets, but they will. they’ve made arrangements with enough who will buy in the conventional manner and then sell to them at a profit for them to resell at greater profit that tey know they’ll get some number of tickets and so they advertise them. yes, this system sucks, they all do, especially when tm is involved. small attempts are being made.

cheers, mark (whose health precludes even trying this time …)

  • 53 Justin Timberlake // May 10, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Tom, please, please, please add a date in Los Angeles. Anywhere in So Cal would suffice, in fact. Phoenix is a bit of a long drive with a car full of prostitutes from Minnesota, 6 (unloaded) shotguns, a dog with a peg-leg and a case of bootleg whiskey. By the way, I was one of lucky few that saw your performance at the Bet Tzedek charity dinner at the Century Plaza hotel in LA a few months back. Your performance was stellar and truly uplifting. Thanks for making my decade - even if you really only played because you would be able to hit up the Macy’s across the street from the hotel.

Any chance of an Australian visit Mr Waits?

  • 56 Amon // May 10, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Here is an idea that has sometimes worked for me . . . call the ticket master in a neighboring city 25 minutes before on-sale. Remember it takes at least 10 minutes to get to a live person, then b.s. about tickets to sports events or hannah montanna tickets, then ask for Mr. Waits tickets. It’s usually a good idea to have a specially trained team effort for this endeavor . . such as TEAM ZISSOU.

Those of you taking about Stubhub…if John Doe buys a Glitter & Doom ticket, then sells it to Stubhub, who then sells it to Jane Smith, how is she going to get in when she dosen’t have the credit card used to purchase the ticket and it’s not in her name? Reading comprehension, kids!

  • 70 dave // May 11, 2008 at 6:27 am

IF tix show up on the Stubhubs/Ebays of the world, the seller would have to go in with the purchaser with this system, since the card the tix were bought with must be swiped to get your seating location. Thus I don’t look for many postings–or if you do see any buyer beware! Tix should be around $85

it’s a shame your reading comprehension doesn’t extend between the lines. original buyer must attend with scalped, only spare or each pair can be sold, but many will. and if you doubt this can be accomplished civilly, past evidence says yes. after all, if you’re willing to drop a grand you may not risk being tossed from the show for stabbing your seatmate

  • 87 fan number one // May 11, 2008 at 7:05 pm

I was the first fan in line to buy tix in 99 at chicago . however there were 2 homeless folks paid by a scalper to buy tickets for him. they were not fans. I camped in line at midnight in january in the cold the night before. I miss the old way deadication and hard work. let me say first i am an expert at buying tix I see alot of shows!! however for the last tour when I clicked buy tix at from 957am to 10am(I kept refreshing) at fucking 10am on the dot it came back no tickets available. bullhit I think ticketbasterds has a deal with other ticket “brokers” aka “scalpers” and they just sell 50% to the public and keep the rest for ebay and other broker agents. does anyone know someone at a broker firm that can confirm this? I did manage to see 7 waits shows!!! however I paid up the ass for some of those tickets. however ebay saved my ass when I saw him seatle I only paid 200$ for 2nd row which I would do for any waits show. what else are you gonna spend money you don’t have on? sorry for the rant. I do like the new system and will be see you raindogs later.

Aw, it would be awesome to see him come up to Vancouver or do a Canadian tour =(

  • 89 Pico81 // May 11, 2008 at 7:30 pm

This will be interesting. We will see if this works. I’ve been lucky enough to see TW twice but I think it has been 31 years since a Valley appearance (Scottsdale Center for the Arts 1977). I mean the Orpheum is not very big. 1,500 or so. But it is obviously the most appropriate setting for this guy. I hope I don’t spill too much beer on the carpet:) I wonder if the balcony will be open. Guess I’ll call them tomorrow to see what is what. Remember…Never date a girl named Ruby and don’t play pool against a guy named Slim. YIPPIE!!!

Please come to Washington Again… Same issue as everyone else. Last time tickets sold out before I could even get through online or over the phone… Was very dissapointing… and now with flights to any of these places costing around 800 round trip from Washington for two people… it’s getting pretty pricey.

  • 93 Poke Fritter // May 11, 2008 at 8:51 pm

The closest you come to us - St. Louis/Columbus/Knoxville - comes at the worst possible time and so once again, Tom, you will be missed in a way that could have been fixed with a stop in Indianapolis. The figure of the tour seems to be making a little fist perhaps ready to open a few bits of sparkle through the north east; any chance for a few dates later this year through Philly, or NY. I’d be glad to let you stay at my South Philly home, and I know a few fun folks who’d have some room for a night in their place as needed.

Your relationship with the passionate random is the closest connection to words touching endless creative force I’ve ever been near. But working girls on the treadmill of joy and accomplishment don’t get around the art world very much so I might be just ill exposed, but I doubt it. Love the stuff you’ve done its just truely authentic and masculin and wonderful.

  • 106 Gina // May 12, 2008 at 6:04 am

Michael - the measures the Waits are taking are to INSURE that seats do not cost 3k…not unless you would like to go to the show with your favorite neighborhood scalper as your date, as Scrible pointed out above.

Euro dates coming soon! thank you for your patience.

Great news about the Tom’s tour - happy to be living in Dublin I tells ye.
HOWEVER there is some dirty rat on eBay trying to sell tickets for this gig:

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/tom-waits-2-tickets-wednesday-30-7-08-in-the-phoenix-pk_W0QQitemZ130222028889QQihZ003QQcategoryZ1306QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I am NOT a rat - this seller (who I hope at worst is just a chancer) deserves to be left alone at the bottom of the world. And that’s still too good for him.

Can someone in Anti notify Waits’ people/ticketmaster and get this seller sent on a one-way ticket to Pluto?

  • 121 Horse // May 12, 2008 at 11:08 am

Watch the press conference Europeaand repeat after Tom…”Eridanus”. This is the route our hero in going to trail in my humble opinion. Barca, Paris, Milan,Vienna, Berlin, London and Dublin. If I’ve missed other cities out I apologise but again “Eridanus”..

  • 122 Horse // May 12, 2008 at 11:44 am

Conbon - good shout. My friend works a ticket office and these last two weeks she has cancelled 400 tickets for a large Football match which are being resold on Evil Bay. Do not use Evil Bay as all you are buying are void tickets if the ticket offices worldwide do their jobs…properly. If you do not get a ticket there will then be a second chance if you identify a TW ticket and let the box office know!!??

  • 128 Willie Nelson // May 12, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Has anyone seen this “Dan from Kansas” post? I hope someone takes care of that soon. I just spoke with the nice folks at the “onlineseats” and they also have 30 and 40th row seats available for $2500.00 and $3500.00 a piece. They said they and their “brokers” (aka scalpers) get them from the theatres directly but didn’t let on how. Someone should put a stop to this immediately. The last Tom shows I saw were thru this same ticketmaster system that is going to be implemented for this show and I still paid over $500.00 on ebay thru scalpers. They just meet you at the door and walk you in. There is no way to avoid scalpers other than legal action which should be taken immediately in the case of this “onlineseats” and whoever else pulls this crap. Someone should be hired thru Anti and/or Tom to combat this directly. Hell, I will do it for a ticket to a show or two. I would love to take a scalper or two to court and roast them over an open flame and eat their flesh alive while they scream for mercy…

  • 132 ab // May 12, 2008 at 4:47 pm

i can’t believe the whinging about ebay. (which is a completely different issue to scalpers)
picture the scene, tickets go on sale, you don’t get any. HOW DO YOU GET IN? i am a genuine fan who doesn’t care how much it costs i will be going.. i might even apply for a job at the theatres.
having said all this, THE ONLY REALLY FAIR WAY TO GET TICKETS TO FANS IS OLD FASHIONED QUEUING FOR TICKETS.

Employment by the theatre would be key as you could sip from the flask and smoke the joint freely from the lungs of the theatre hanging in the overhead lighting scaffolding because termination would obviously not be an issue in the plan.

I got in when I met the scalper in a back ally in Memphis, scalped him and took his face and i.d. like Anthony Hopkins c. 1991 Silence of the Lambs stylie.

Just wanted to know if there will be a tour in europe also???
sorry for the common question again:)

  • 149 JMS // May 13, 2008 at 6:18 am

    Dear Anti,
As someone who is planning their life on trying to get to a few of these shows I am all for what you and Tom are trying to do but there is clearly something wrong with the system when we see things such as this:

    http://www.a2zseating.com/ResultsGeneral.aspx?stype=0&kwds=tom%20waits
    and
    http://cgi.ebay.com/2-TICKETS-TOM-WAITS-ATLANTA-FOX-THEATRE-THEATER-GA_W0QQitemZ170218760237QQihZ007QQcategoryZ16122QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Clearly there are seats being released before they go on sale to the general public and in order to save the credibility of this system, I would ask that you do everything you can to stop this situation. Maybe even mark the seat #s and disallow people entering after purchasing on the secondary market? I am sure there is a way of seeing who had access to these tickets to purchase early and disciplining them.

  • 150 larry // May 13, 2008 at 7:19 am

Interesting that the Ticketmaster web site for the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix deleted the Watis concert this morning, though Ticketmaster has a page on how to buy tickets through the paperless system for the Glitter and Doom Tour. Anyway, being that I missed Waits at Santa Clara University in March ‘75 because I took a leave of absense to attend another college that year, and I missed his Dec. ‘77 concert in Santa Cruz (both dates with the late Jon Stewart), I’d really like to see him on this tour. I’ve noticed no one seems to be buying those tickets on sites such as TicketTango, as the same ones are on sale everyday lately.

Europe? Has Tom ever played Wales?

  • 152 Gina // May 13, 2008 at 8:54 am

JMS - have seen those and others. Obv some tickets are going to slip through the cracks, but it is a real buyers beware situation…imagine paying hundreds of dollars for a ticket and then not being able to use it.

Adam - there may or may not be a record called Glitter and Doom coming soon, but really this tour is just for the sheer joy of being in Arizona in June

Euros - YES, there is a European tour, but if you ask again, the answer is no. How about adding the Anti blog to your RSS feed, and then you’ll be the first to know? Gx.

    This from my local newspaper:

“Limit of two tickets per order per household. Duplicate orders will be cancelled.

All tickets sold will be delivered via Paperless Ticket and there will be no paper tickets for the concert.

At the time of entry, the concertgoer must present the credit card used to purchase the tickets as well as a valid government-issued photo ID.

The entire party must enter the venue at the same time. Tickets are non-transferable.”

WTH is this all about? I’m not going to see a goddamned national security briefing. It’s a TW concert. What gives with this nonsense?
Have to enter together? Have to bring my credit card? Only two per household?

Who does Waits think he is now?

I saw Tom in Asheville last year - had a hell of a time gettin those tix but I do admit I cried when he did “Blue Valentine”. A GREAT show in a city that he doesn’t visit much and has a HUGE fan base!! My sister has seen him many times years ago in Philly and has told me hands down he is GREAT - EVERY time!I am praying I get tix this year for Knoxville.

  • 172 ForThoseWhoLikeNewsMaybe // May 13, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Joe - I don’t think there is an age restriction for any of the shows, Best for you to double check with the venue whicb you are thinking of going to though. Bear in mind that Ticketmaster will require that the person who buys the tickets brings the credit card used to purchase the tickets and a valid photo ID to the venue. Check out their site for further details

Glenn - you will be able to buy tickets via Ticketmaster even though you are based in Australia. A good few Europeans bought tickets for the last tour in 2006. Again you will need to go on the main Ticketmaster.com site for further details. Might be an idea to register your details with them beforehand. Good luck in getting the tickets

Gina - I used to live in Atlanta & worked in a few entertainment industries [theatre, motorsports etc]. Invariably, people who worked AT Ticketmaster got hold of tickets ahead of time. How can this be prevented?
I’ve been a TW fan since ‘76; never seen him yet! I will be trying my damnedest Friday!
Here is an idea for those of you who won’t be shackled to a desk when tix go onsale - a friend in ATL used to go to the Ticketmaster outlet in a grocery that was in the International part of town; rarely was anyone in the line after the tickets she wanted. I do believe i just got this scalper removed from ebay for trying to sell tickets for Dublin Ireland, selling tickets that he had bought from a scalpers site apparently they were “bought by mistake for the wrong day”. The gig isnt even confirmed, the tickets arent on sale yet and he had the cheek to start scalping 2 tickets starting at 340euro. He claims he will sell again on ebay when he has the tickets in his posession. Hopefully (please i beg of you Mr Waits) the tickets will be sold in the same way in Europe. That way you can either go to the show or go to hell. Rock on Mr Waits, only you could sort the scalpers.
Some info on Europe would be good, so i can work on my plan of action for ticket purchasing.

Screw “Paperless Ticketing” the scalpers have already proven thru numerous websites that they can still charge three grand a pop. What Ticketmaster should do is absorb Wal Mart, Price Club, K Mart, Costco, the Federation, the Bohemian Club and Freestone Bakery just for taste and implant RFD chips in the back of our necks just barely outside the spine and that way we can just pass smoothly thru the turnstiles all the while being tracked by Ticketmaster/Department of Defense satellite.

  • 220 Cossette // May 15, 2008 at 6:29 am

Ash, tour dates for dublin have already been released. there’s been no word given by the venues etc so i’m not sure if it was released prior to his concent but hotpress seems to have mentioned it on their site so go have a look. full details require a paid subscription to the site i think so i an’t give you any ticket details i’m afriad.

I’m just worried about how ridiculous the prices might be on the tickets in Ireland. We haveea tendency to get jipped. Especially if anyone had the audacity to charge upward of 400$ like in America. That’s a bloody joke. I’ve been waitin to see him since i was a sprog but even i wouldn’t dream of buyin into that rubbish you can head off like! Nobody would have that kind of money excluding travel costs and accomodation. That’s just takin advantage on the part of the venue/promoters.

  • 223 Ragamuffin Jim // May 15, 2008 at 6:47 am

Strategy for estimating demand for tickets:

For the benefit of those traveling long-distance to see one or more of the Waits shows, I’ve compiled a list of the approximate fixed-seating capacities of the auditoriums he’s playing, followed by the population of the surrounding metro area, followed by the ratio of people in that city per seat in the venue. This may
help you estimate your odds of getting a ticket if you know how many seats are likely to be available given the potential local fan-base:

    Venue/Seats/Metro Population/Inhabitants Per Seat

    Orpheum Theatre – Phoenix, AZ
    1338 4.18 million 3124

Plaza Theatre – El Paso, TX
    2039 .735 million 360

    Jones Hall – Houston, TX
    2911 5.63 million 1934

    Palladium – Dallas, TX
    3000* 6.15 million 2050

    Brady Theatre – Tulsa, OK
    2750 .906 million 329

Fox Theatre – St. Louis, MO
    4278 2.80 million 655

    Ohio Theatre – Columbus, OH
    2795 1.75 million 626

    Civic Auditorium – Knoxville, TN
    2358 .682 million 289

Times Union Center – Jacksonville, FL
    3000 1.30 million 433

    Saenger Theatre – Mobile, AL
    1921 .404 million 210

    Alabama Theatre – Birmingham, AL
    2200 1.11 million 505

    Fox Theatre – Atlanta, GA
    4678 5.28 million 1129

The good news is that these venues are significantly larger and nicer than some of the places he played on the Orphans Tour. Eight of the sites are historic ornate movie palaces and auditoriums. The rest, are fairly modern concert facilities. *Note: The Dallas Palladium show is general admission standing-room for all tickets. Statistically, the best chances of getting a ticket will be in Mobile, Knoxville, Tulsa, and El Paso. Given that there are two shows in Phoenix, the ratio of inhabitants per available seat could potentially be half of the 3124 figure.

The bad news is that a few of the concerts are within short driving and flying distances of major markets, including some cities that Waits has not played for 20 – 30 years. For instance, the St. Louis show will likely attract fans from Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Kansas City, and Memphis. The Columbus show will draw people from Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Dayton, Detroit, Baltimore, and DC. Phoenix is the closest concert to Southern California and Nevada.

Anyway, that’s my strategy for getting seats. I honestly hope the “ticketless” entry system works and 99% of the seats will go to true fans, not brokers and their rich clients. Tom is very serious about keeping scalpers and other industry leeches from profiting off his work. If widespread ticket scalping at exorbitant prices occurs on this tour, he may stop playing live and just do a benefit show or two every few years. He’s done this before in the past, when he became frustrated with the exploitive aspects of touring and recording. I hope a few unscrupulous, greedy, or drunk people won’t spoil the shows for the rest of us.

    Good luck everyone,

Ragamuffin Jim (one of many library-rat Raindogs)

I just got off the phone with Ticketbastard, & they claim that the Houston show will NOT be sold through them tomorrow. When I dialed the phone number for Jones Hall, I had some ancient lady read me a script about the city of Houston owning Jones Hall & she worked for the landlord. Every time I tried to get an answer out of her, she just re-read her script. All websites indicate that Ticketbastard will be selling the Houston show, but everything seems to contradict that. Anyone have the inside word on H-Town?

    Jones Hall Concert Info.

The Jones Hall show is listed on the website for the venue:

Ticketmaster is still adding shows to their Waits page. A few have been added since this morning. Check back on the Ticketmaster page later this afternoon or evening.

I saw Waits open for Zappa in St Louis in 1974. Fan ever since. We were the five or so people who paid attention, no one else wanted to listen to some beatnik on guitar and piano. At one point between songs, he says, “Hi, my name’s Tom.”…kinda like, “Hey, remember I’m up here?” All I’d ever heard at the time was the Egrets doing ‘Old 55′.

Now 35 years later…..it had better be possible to get tix. Hey, all you Chicago, Memphis, etc folks: wait a few days, ok?

and….while we’re at it. What’s with all the Missouri references in Waits’ last few albums? Moberly? and trivia from the St.Louis Globe Democrat? is there some kind of family connection?

I was lucky enough to see Tom play at Hammersmith, London in 2004 and I’m on tenter hooks at the thought of another opportunity with him coming to Europe.

I know just the place he should play…

    …but keep it quiet ….shhh…

  • 236 SNH // May 15, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Trust me, the paperless thing works. Traveled 8 hours to see Tom in Memphis on the last tour and it was an easy process. Just have your ID and the credit card you used and you’re good! Face it, you certainly don’t want someone in Ten-Buck-Two buying tickets and reselling them with no intention of going to the concert only to make a profit. It pushes all those people out and allows the true fans to get, go, and enjoy! Good for Tom. IT WORKS!

  • 255 leah // May 16, 2008 at 5:39 am

As an employee for Ticketmaster, I can tell you that this method is unfortunately what it comes down to due to scalpers gouging the market and charging five times as much for a ticket. Sorry to those who have difficulty, but I suggest having a friend get the tickets to go with you (if you don’t have a credit card) and have them swipe theirs. For those who think Ticketmaster is horrible, price tickets with a scalper and see who is better!

  • 256 Tim // May 16, 2008 at 6:09 am

not to be. Not even singles left after 7 minutes.

  • 261 Missy // May 16, 2008 at 6:18 am

Got my tickets for Knoxville. 1st row of the balconey at 9:30 am. Then logged on out of curiosity for Ohio, and would have been in the 5th row, but all the way to the side. So I think I made out pretty well! I am so excited, I know I’ll get no work done today!

  • 262 theglenburnie // May 16, 2008 at 6:18 am

So I am a bit confused….maybe someone can explain. I lucked out and got great seats for the Atlanta show. So I get to the show and show my credit card and id at the door, then how do they know what seat is mine….? Do I have to swipe my cards everytime I get up to go to the bathroom? Can I just sit anywhere? I am very confused!

  • 264 josh // May 16, 2008 at 6:22 am

    Ticketmaster is satan incarnate.

There was a day when tickets to shows were under $5.00

Thanks to bastard companies like them, we now pay way over inflated ticket prices, and 20 different fees per ticket.

I put them below scalpers. At least scalpers represent a man attempting to make a living, Ticketmaster is just a faceless corporation designed to fuck you at every turn.

  • 265 Lantz // May 16, 2008 at 6:24 am

i got my tickets!!!! i’ve listened to so much Tom Waits over the years, in my mind he doesn’t seem like he’s a real person. He seems more a kin to the Sasquatch or something. It’ll be nice to finally see him in the flesh. Thanks for all the damn fine music Tom.

  • 266 MAtt // May 16, 2008 at 6:25 am

Can someone tell me how Columbus is sold out at 9:59 when tickets do not go on sale until 10:00 A.m.? What a crock. I guess I will have to wait until I die and go to Heaven to see Tom Waits. He will never be in Pittsburgh — that is for sure.

  • 267 ed // May 16, 2008 at 6:29 am

How is it that Columbus sold out in 10 seconds, but all of the other venues still have tickets available at 10:30?

  • 268 Garry // May 16, 2008 at 6:31 am

Im so excited. Just as a pre trial to buying tickets from ticketbastards for a european show. I tried to get tickets for Atlanta at 9.25 Atlanta time on my clock. I got 2 tickets for row P. Just a trial but it worked.
Hopefully Ticketmaster Europe will not fuck up by selling the tickets early or something stupid like they have done for other gigs in the past.
I was so tempted to buy the ticks for $206 for 2 about 70euro each and fly to the US. I will be so pissed if Europe doesnt work for me.
Can someone tell me if i am allowed buy 2 tickets for 2 different venues in Europe, did it work that way in the US.
Also can people tell me if Ticketmaster sold tickets early, late or on time. I am getting so nervous.

Garry, it looks like early to me. I thought punctuality meant something in the friggin world?

  • 271 Jo // May 16, 2008 at 6:34 am

Obviously this didn’t work out as well as they thought. I just went on e-bay and there are already two sets of tickets, one of which is being sold for $4,999. I sat here and watched the time roll around, put in the codes, and still no tickets. Sucks that he doesn’t do more than one show at a location. He would sell out two shows, I am sure. Especially in OHIO! The only place in the Midwest that he is going.

  • 272 Tracy // May 16, 2008 at 6:36 am

There are still amazingly good tickets for Atlanta available at 10:38 eastern time. Just look for “best available”.

  • 273 MikeDallas // May 16, 2008 at 6:42 am

    What are the ticket prices?

  • 274 Garry // May 16, 2008 at 6:42 am

Im thinking my clock is incorrect. Im reading 9.42 now but its probably 10.42. Had a check for Jacksonvill and also was able to get tickets. But selling fast i think for all shows.
I think the security will work. Hopefully nobody will be foolish enough to buy second hand tickets. I wouldnt even buy second hand tickets at face value, because you aint getting in even if you are seen sobbing outside the venue.

  • 275 MAtt // May 16, 2008 at 6:46 am

  • 282 Kim // May 16, 2008 at 6:53 am

The best trick to getting tickets as they go on sale on ticketmaster is to have an account with TM and pre-register all of your billing info so you don’t have to waste time filling it out at the last second. I had all my info ready to and all I had to do was press “best available”. Scored two tickets and I’m way excited. And to think I was going to go to Columbus that week just for my sister’s wedding. Now it’s going to be a great trip instead of a “good” one.

  • 286 ed // May 16, 2008 at 7:01 am

The only thing I can think about why Columbus sold out so fast is that it is a central and close location for everyone on the east coast. Is the theatre in Columbus a lot smaller then the other theatres? It seats 2,779 people.

  • 287 Garry // May 16, 2008 at 7:02 am

I dont really understand the different US time zones, seems some are not on sale yet. So did some shws go on sale early. I have a desktop clock application that synchronises with the the correct time through the internet. But it seems there is another time zone called Ticketmaster.

this show is for fans, right? I’ve been a tremendous fan for ten years since i was in high school. This is the first available time I will get to see him. I’ve been on ticketmaster and on the phone since 9:59 am (tickets went on sale at 10am) and I can’t buy tickets. If this system was set up to prevent scalpers who sell tickets for profit to fans who are willing to pay extra so that they have a chance to see him, I wish I could pay ,more than $85! This system has made it impossible for me, an average guy, to buy one ticket for myself. I took this as a ‘once in a lifetime’ possibility to see one of my hero’s for the first time and now the seemingly brilliant plan to stop scalpers has completely crippled any chance I might have to see Tom. I hate this, why couldn’t I spend the night in front of the ticket box office to buy them in person? Tom, if you ever read this, I don’t know who you’ll be playing for in Columbus, OH, but it won’t be one of your biggest fans.

  • 303 Alan // May 16, 2008 at 7:29 am

I got tickets for Columbus. About 20 rows back in the center. I clicked the link at 10:00 and 2 seconds sharp. I was already logged into Ticket Master. The friend I am going with was at a seperate location, and did the same thing. When he tried, he was already told that it was sold out. Somehow I got through. Very sorry to everyone who couldn’t get tickets. Something very unusally seemed to have happened in Columbus. The other venues still had tickets left when I looked 30 minutes later. I’m not sure how Columbus could have been sold out when my friend tried at the same time I did.

  • 304 Yvette // May 16, 2008 at 7:29 am

I saw Tom perform on the Riverboat President in New Orleans in ‘82 or ‘83 . Worried that I’d never get another chance to see him live again. Just got tickets to the Houston show, great seats (Orchestra) and will be worth every penny I know. I love the fact that he wants these intimate shows in smaller venues instead of stadiums — it just wouldn’t be the same to see him in a 25000 seat arena.

WTF?! Ticketmaster blows! How did you people get seats? Did they let in early? I was there at 10:00 exactly and nothing was available. And of course every ticketmaster phone number was busy.

Waits, One: you’ve got to tour more, buddy. Two: you’ve got to figure out how to circumvent ticketmaster, they are a hegemony and a most-ineffecient distributor of tickets.

What happened to the earlier announced NC show? I hope more shows are on the horizon…

  • 309 Yvette // May 16, 2008 at 7:36 am

If you’re doing it online, your computer’s clock (or whatever clock you’re using) will not be the same as Ticketmaster’s server time. If you get on right at 10, it may already be 10:01 or 10:02 or even later. I know Columbus was sold out in less than 2 minutes, probably less than 1.

Folks we are all friends here, and Tom Waits fans.
We can all email ebay to ban listers from listing tickets that dont exist (because a paperless system is being used) and the tickets are invalid as you have to have the credit card that they were puchased with so should not be listed.
I did this last week to an Irish guy who had apparently bought tckets from an agent (the tickets dont exist because the concert has not been confirmed) and he did not have tickets to sell because they are not on sale yet.
It worked for me, he was asked to delete the post within 6-8 hours.

Birmingham: Row 5 on the floor. Yes.

  • 329 happy // May 16, 2008 at 8:37 am

I sent an email to eBay as well regarding the above listing but they will probably do nothing since the seller is not in Nigeria.

  • 330 Yvette // May 16, 2008 at 8:38 am

I also reported the 3 listings that are up on ebay right now to ebay. I said I think they’re fraudulent because the sellers are claiming you will have to meet them and they will escort you and your guest in. If only the credit card holder and a guest can get in, how are they doing this?

  • 331 Chai // May 16, 2008 at 8:38 am

For the Pittsburgh people - Knoxville still have tickets available. It is only a 7 hour drive, which is not that much more than Columbus.

  • 332 Valerie // May 16, 2008 at 8:44 am

YES!!! Just got tickets for his Dallas show! I can remember the first time I heard Tom… I was on the Junior High bus, and an intern DJ took over the local album rock station for the afternoon… he played “Better Off Without a Wife”… and that’s the last I heard on the radio for a very long time. (Every fool at the record store pointed me toward that hairsprayed poser from The Babies every time I asked if they had his records… ugh!) Later, my husband read Waits lyrics at his uncle’s funeral; and two years ago, it was “Take it With Me When I Go” and “Come on Up to the House” that made my family smile through their tears just days after my mom passed away. We hope our Tulsa friends get tickets for that show, because we’ve shared MANY a happy time listening and marveling over the lyrical irony and observation; and inventive musical techniques. I think my husband decided to marry me when I played Bone Machine on a weekend getaway. God. This is going to be sooooo phenomenal… am I too old to “gush”?… :-)

  • 338 jeff // May 16, 2008 at 9:08 am

Seems as though some folks bought two sets. That way they can sell off the two “guest” spots. They each get escorted in by the original buyers, once in the venue the guests get the seats together and the card holders get seats together. Quite sharp I must say….

  • 339 Shan // May 16, 2008 at 9:11 am

if that doesn’t work bribe security and listen from the back door!
they don’t make ‘em like they used to!

  • 342 Yvette // May 16, 2008 at 9:23 am

It’s not whining about ebay. It’s that (a) people who buy these tickets may get screwed if they can’t get into the show and (b) the whole reason Tom is selling them like this is to PREVENT ticket brokers from buying and reselling.

I did get tickets BTW… I just think it sucks for others.

E-Bay listings not necessarily fraudulent even with paperless tickets
    Year 2006 / Tom Waits
Venue: Cleveland House of Blues (Capacity 1200)
NO TICKETS AHEAD OF TIME / WILL CALL ONLY / ID and Credit Card needed for admission
My friend and I were both trying to score a pair via TicketMaster not thinking we’d have a chance. We were lucky and both succeeded. Now we had four admissions but only needed two. We posted our extras on eBay without a reserve price and did what others will do….had the buyers meet us in line and we walked them in with us as our guests. Then they were on their own as this was a general admission event….but they stayed with us and we had a great time. Wound up standing right at the stage as we were within the first groups to enter. They paid about double face value and were not upset at all about paying that price….even bought us beers the moment we entered. I was lucky to get the tics but would have been happy to pay twice the face value to stand with my elbows on the stage for my 1st Tom Waits concert.

This time we were both lucky again and might do the same thing. Sorry to those that missed out and congrats to the ones that got tickets! Enjoy.

    Demand for Columbus show:

Many of you are wondering why the Columbus, OH show sold out faster than the others. It’s simple, Columbus is the closest city to the eastern population centers. It’s on I-70 & I-71, and a short drive from Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Dayton, Detroit, Louisville and Indianapolis. It’s a 6-8 hour drive from DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Buffalo. It costs $100 round-trip on Greyhound or $130 round-trip on Southwest air from where I live in Maryland.

The other issue, is that Tom has never played Columbus (the nation’s largest college town) and has not played Cincinnati in 30 years. The pent-up demand from those two cities alone was incredible. He could have probably sold 10 - 12 thousand seats there versus the 2795 available in the Ohio Theatre.

Lastly, Tom likes being a cult-figure. He intentionally plays limited numbers of dates at small venues in out-of-the-way places to create anticipation for his infrequent tours. Actually, he’s recorded and toured more in the last few years than he has since the 1980s. His shows are some of the hardest to get tickets to in the entire live music business.

On Ticketmaster, is there any way to avoid the stupid text box that you have to fill out, it’s getting harder to read everytime i buy from ticketmaster. I would have thought that if you had logged in to ticketmaster that you would not have to fill it in, but it seems you still have to.

KWA, if you’ve been to shows in Dallas-you know that there are some talkers. Perhaps you never notice because you’re one of them? ?

Whatevs-all I’m saying is that it would be nice if there were some manners during shows in this city. Maybe more shows would come and play here (instead of Austin) if we didn’t have such a bad reputation?

And yes! My name DOES describe it all!

I called the Ohio Theatre to find out where my Loge seats were (can’t really tell from the seating charts). They told me that the balcony is divided into 3 sections — the “Loge” is the first section of the balcony (7 rows, A-G), the “Mezzanine” is the middle section of the balcony (rows A-M) and the “Balcony” is the rear section of the balcony (rows O-Z)… not sure what happened to row N.

Unfortunately, that’s the negative part of this system. You can’t sell your other tickets to anyone with paperless ticketing. You’d have to be present with the credit card you used to be able to get in. You might want to call Ticketmaster. (Their site says you can’t cancel or return orders but they may have a different policy with paperless tickets.)

FuckFace is right, Dallas crowds are noisy. I recently saw Dylan at the House of Blues and people were just standing around talking like there was just some background music in a bar. I never wanted to pummel people so badly in my entire life. Not only that, but the people I was listening to obviously didn’t know shit about Dylan. If you want to go hang out at a bar and talk, go to a bar and talk! Just don’t go to a place where people are trying to enjoy a band! I must say too, I just saw Wilco in Austin at Stubbs and there were people doing the same thing, blah blah blah, though not as many. I hope that for $85 a ticket people will shut up and watch/listen. If they don’t and I’m standing anywhere nearby, I’ll slap the shit out of them!

On a side note, I do think it sucks that Tom is playing at the Palladium here in Dallas. General Admission is gonna blow.

  • 392 Tag // May 16, 2008 at 4:07 pm

    Columbus….
I got my ticket after being logged into the site a few mins before 10. My clock said 10:01 before they went on sale. I lucked out and got 12th row. Was sold out in 2 mins. I see there are still tix at some venues and that’s as of 8 pm EST. I agree with others about the idiotic security words you have to type in the box. If this was a scalper free show then we shouldn’t have had to type that in. Anything Ticketmaster can do to annoy the hell out of us they’ll do. And I’m not sure why they think their ‘convenience fees’ are convenient. Convenient for them to get money for nothing. BTW….those of you unfamiliar with the Ohio Theatre….it’s a beautiful venue and is perfect for his show. Enjoy. I’m going to guess everyone needs to arrive super early to deal with this paperless entry thing.

There are already Columbus tix on ebay. One pair for $4000 (yes, thousand) from an obvious ticket broker/scalper. The other pair looks like a fan who bought 2 and their friend bought 2 so they’re selling the extra two. Those start at $200 for the pair.

So, “Slip me a little crimson Jimson, give me the low-down Brown, what’s the scoop Betty Boop?, I’M ON MY WAY INTO TOWN!!!”

I’m going to be gutted if I can’t get a ticket for the European tour, as I’d happily travel to the States to see him. I wish they’d hurry up and tell us the tour dates so that I can book my annual leave - July tends to be a popular holiday month for some reason.

We’re not all jobless drunken bums, twiddling our thumbs waiting for the next music genius to waltz into town. GIVE US THE DATES PLEASE!!!!!

Any chance The Pogues will support Tom in Dublin?

  • 416 Rain Dog // May 17, 2008 at 3:49 am

I am very disappointed that the Dallas show is general admission. For these prices and the popularity of the show you would think the least they could do is offer reserved seating. Apparently the Palladium does provide that option (according to the seating chart) for some of it’s shows. I’ve never been to this venue. Anyone who has attended general admission concerts there care to comment what this will be like? I would also like to hear an explanation from the Tour Director why this decision was made…but I’m guessing that won’t happen.

  • 436 Steve // May 18, 2008 at 5:06 am

I bought a ticket to see Tom Waits, but rather than being happy about it I feel like I was just raped by ticketmaster. Be aware that, in addition to the exorbitant ticket price of $85, they also charge a “facility charge” ($1), a “convencience charge” ($12.35), an “order processing fee” ($5.10), and “additional taxes” ($1.02), and that all of those charges are for a venue for which they don’t even mail you the tickets (which is usually their main excuse for embedding additional charges)? Of course, the only reason they get away with it is because people are willing to pay. I feel like I’m contributing to something I am 100% against. What this country needs is for influential people like, say, Tom Waits to stand up to ticketmaster and tell them to go fuck themselves.

I’m bummed, didn’t get Columbus Tix and with 2 kids (2 & 4), my wife and I aren’t quite as mobile as we used to be. With that said, I’ve seen the man perform a few times (most recently the HOB in Cleveland, don’t know if I’ll ever experience anything quite like that again) and for all of you going or going to your first show, enjoy it, as it will be etched in your grey matter forever. Truely the greatest performer. Appreciate. Unlike most things in life, the anticipation will NOT exceed the actual event

    Have fun all…………..

Ol’ man Waits does not like the UK very much. I have a feeling he will play Edinburgh or Glasgow instead of London. It was so difficult to get tickets for the London gig last time that I ended up getting tickets for two nights in Amsterdam instead. Stood out side the London gig and tickets were passing hands for £300 and up. Tom Yorke lost his ticket and had to buy one from the scalpers.

  • 457 Dave // May 18, 2008 at 3:09 pm

I was excited about Tom Waits coming to Mobile, Alabama…until I read about ‘how’ the tix must be picked up…no paper tix, must have THE credit card used, no more than 2 per household! What?? Who came up with this idea? I spend $85 plus surcharges then have wait in line…why have advanced sales at all?? Can you imagine how FUBAR this will be…long lines are assured.
It only makes it more difficult for his fans that have been “waiting on Waits.” If scalping is a problem, this is not the answer. This will method will ruin the experience….

A one minute internet glitch and I’m locked out of going to any show on this tour. I think the anti-scalping thing really sucks it disallows plenty of real fans from the chance to get tickets. He should make it possible to resell tickets off his website where he takes most of the cut, at least it would then be possible to get tickets after the fact, or to be able to go in three. There has to be a better way. Disgruntled fan now waiting for another chance if I live that long…

It may be a fine solution for scalpers, but the ticket trap for Tom is not a solution at all for avid fans (poor musicians, for one) who make a conscious choice not to hold credit cards. I’m merely trying to get a ticket for my brother with MY credit card. Is it really a hinderance or risk of scalping to sell ONE ticket per credit card in someone else’s name? So, I tried to play your game. I bought a temporary Visa card for my brother, but he couldn’t activate it because he doesn’t have a utility bill in his name. He’s a musician. He plays Tom Waits as a busker on the streets of New Orleans. He’s an avid fan kept from experiencing the art of the musician by whom he’s been most influenced. We’ve even attempted to change an electric bill to his name so he could activate the card and get the ticket before they sold out, and guess what? That’s $150 for a new deposit and several days to get the paperwork in the mail and faxed to the card company. It’s not like we’re not trying here. Your rules MAY keep scalpers out, but they are also barriers for honest fans. I just saw tickets for the Houston show on ticketliquidator.com for over $1000. There is an elitist principle at work here, as much as the perported rationale insists it’s in the interest of “everyone.”

  • 478 Stevie Dee // May 19, 2008 at 8:26 am

I think they should have made a certain number available at the venues, so people could have queued up. You could have paid in cash, but still got your names printed on the tickets to stop touts.

Even so, you’re never going to please everyone!

I arrived to find that the promoter had closed sales for the ticket window, and left a note saying tickets were available as online sales only. So, I rushed home (40-minutes away) and arrived to find that seats anywhere near the front were “Real Gone”… I guess I’m from a different time - when folks depended on the chance at getting good seats via the venue - in the Dark Ages before the internet. I don’t mind the price of the tickets - I just don’t want to be sitting next to the exit - and those seats are still available. Soon to be taken by the Dutch, I’m sure….

    Dear Mr Waits,
My son and I have the same address for our credit cards (my address) although we do not live together. Yesterday, we purchased 2 pairs of tickets independently. I am coming with my wife and he is coming with his girlfriend to see your show. We were planning to drive together from New York city. Unfortunately , since we have the same address they canceled my tickets. I was so looking forward to have this family trip together as we have somehow grown apart and this seemed like a great opportunity . He is a musician and a fanatic fan of yours. My wife and I also enjoy your work.
I did write to the ticketing office and they said that they can do nothing about it! Although I do understand your aim to cut scalpers, but why such a sever policy as they will check id and credit cards at the door before entering? Isn’t Knoxville will call?
I was hoping that you may make an exception as this trip means a lot to my family and I. I am hoping that you will be reading these posts!
There are still tickets available at Knoxville!

    Sincerely,

    Shoja Youssefi

    Hi Petter

Phoenix Park is horrible after dark , rain hail or shine
Too many shows in Ireland are ruined by the weather
mucky fields around the tent, cars getting stuck.. and that’s before you make it into a freezing tent
But I suppose the promoters need to have it in a big tent instead of the theatres to make up the fees
but I’m willing to suffer to see TW :-/

It’s located in the Hotel San Carlos, the most reasonably priced 3-star hotel within walking distance (they have a AAA rate of $98 a night). For us out-of-towners, it looks like the optimal place…

    Good luck, see you there…

Competing with thousands of other people for a seat is just wayyyyyyy too Americanistic for our blood. We’ll stay home and watch Soprano reruns. And then afterwards, we’ll crank up Orphans while I wash up the dishes.

    Dearest Mr Waits,

We absolutely do not want you in Barcelona or anyplace near that. The sunshine, the mediterranean air and flair, they just don’t get along well with you music, you see. Even with a handfull of confetti in you pocket, you don’t get reflected moons on dark wet pavements here, you will never find a brokenhearted lover, you shall not enter an overcrowded bar full of late night losers…

    Having said that… PLEASE, come!!

    Cheers!

  • 533 Stevie Dee // May 21, 2008 at 2:57 am

Well lets remember that this is before fees, which will likely take the price close to £90 ($180), even for a “cheap” ticket. Perhaps you find that an acceptable price to pay, but I think it is pretty absurd. I saw some Americans complaining that tickets came to $100! All of this is before we consider traveling costs and accommodation. I’m a Tom Waits fan just like everyone else here, but I can’t help feeling pretty dispirited knowing I will probably never get to see my favourite musician live, and the main reason will be MONEY.

  • 534 disgusted // May 21, 2008 at 4:02 am

same as Stevie Dee said, tickets for Edinburgh are £75($150)/£95($190) and that’s before booking fees etc are added. All those concerned in this blatant rip off should be ashamed of themselves. Was really looking forward to this but these prices are fundamentally wrong

price isn’t really the issue. you do have more than 6000 fans in the uk tom. a lot of them are going to be extremely dissapointed if you only play two dates. add the castle if it isn’t already there. that way i could get some sleep over the next few days.

  • 539 Goolay // May 21, 2008 at 5:26 am

Tom Waits plays the Phoenix Park on July 30 and 31, with a third date added on August 1.

Undoubtedly one of the summer’s most hotly-anticipated acts, Waits plays three shows at the colourfully-named RatCellar marquee as part of his Glitter and Doom tour.

The fully-seated shows, which will be Waits’ first Dublin dates since the early ’80s, are priced from €116.25 and €131.25.

Tickets will go on sale this Tuesday May 27 at 9am.

  • 563 one eyed myron // May 21, 2008 at 9:34 am

    Take a read on this…

    http://blogcritics.org/archives/2008/05/21/071536.php

The ticket policy utilized for Tom Waits’ upcoming Glitter and Doom concert tour is receiving mixed reviews among the musician’s more vocal fans. This policy, primarily designed to ensure that scalpers do not have an opportunity to acquire and then resell tickets at butt-puckering inflated prices, limits the number of tickets to two per household per show, requires the purchaser to show both the credit card used and government-issued photo identification the night of the show, and ends with a quick, relatively painless blood donation that would seriously go a lot smoother if you’d just stop squirming and crying and remember this needle can very easily go somewhere else but if you’re good you’ll get juice and cookies.

Many Waits fans feel this is the best way to ensure that his most dedicated and affluent fans have an opportunity to see the musician live, without having to pay exorbitant prices to scalpers that they would willingly pay anyway.

Warner Spencer, a self-confident 45-year old advertising executive who has worked with several high-profile musical legends in co-opting their tunes for commercial use and still uses the word “bro” way too much, stated that he supports the policy. “Just because I like hearing Tom sing about Peoria Johnson, Scarface Ron, and Yodeling Elaine doesn’t mean I want to sit next to those scumbags. This ticketing approach, along with the fact that tickets start at around $70, will keep most of the leeches, mooches, and smelly societal bottom feeders outside the palace gates.”

Spencer added, “I know Tom is vehemently opposed to licensing his songs for commercial use. While that’s very noble – Tom, buddy, pal, homey, bro – you’re missing the boat on this one. “Hoist That Rag” would be perfect for a Lysol commercial. The homely yet still attractive housewife actress has already been cast. We’d just need to clean that song up a bit and get a more conventional voice to sing it. I could have the baksheesh heading you’re way in no time. Call me bro.”

Other fans are far more ambivalent about how tickets were sold for the upcoming tour. Ian Middleton gave a half-smile/half-frown as he expressed what could only be described as a mixture of apathy and confusion: “I easily got tickets for St. Louis but was shut out of Columbus. Now unless I somehow find a sympathetic person with an extra ticket or violently incapacitate someone the night of the show and steal their credit card, tickets, and identity, I’ll only be seeing one show this time around. It sucks, kind of.”

Middleton, a divorce arbitrator who describes himself as a “middle-of-the-road guy, most of the time, for the most part,” ultimately gave the policy a mild endorsement: “You can’t please all the people all the time. So some of the people will be upset part of the time. Which means some of the people will be happy most of the time. I guess you can’t get much better than that.”

Nevertheless, a small segment of Waits fans are very angry with the policy, coupled with the high demand for tickets for a very limited number of shows. “The only way to ensure true fans get a chance at tickets is to sell them at the venue’s box office, where those without wives, jobs, children, or other societal responsibilities can sleep outside for days subsisting only on beef jerky and Swordfishtrombones to snag the first tickets,” said Justin Bukeler of Columbus, Ohio.

Other fans are upset that a credit card is required to purchase tickets. “Some of us have made a conscious decision, assisted by several aggressive and unrelenting credit agencies, one foreclosed home, a giant Samoan loan shark nicknamed “Stumpy,” and two separate stints at bankruptcy, to live the aimless, rootless, drunken, quasi-romantic bohemian lifestyle that Tom abandoned sometime in the 1980s,” said performance artist Josh Brokeman. “I only carry cash. I’m very disappointed people like me won’t have the opportunity to con unsuspecting people by selling them magazines for the homeless in order to buy a ticket with their cold, hard, stolen cash.”

With tickets for some shows selling out in a matter of minutes, such as in Phoenix and Columbus, some fans won’t be seeing their musical hero in concert this time around. These fans feel there is a simple solution to this problem: “If Waits really cared about his fans, he’d tour like a beaten one-eyed dog, play 25,000-seat venues in the same city for a week at a time, and reserve a seat each night just for me,” Brokeman offered.

“I’m very disappointed in Mr. Waits,” Brokeman lamented. “I can’t get a ticket and I also don’t have the opportunity to be exploited by scalpers by paying thousands of dollars for one. Is that looking out for your fans’ best interests? I don’t think so. Thanks a lot, Tom.”

Just wondering if a person was to buy from ebay, i presume you don’t pay until you meet to get in, at which point you decide you dont want the ticket as they are not for resale.
So what im asking is how legal is it for ticketmaster to say something is not for resale.
I would love to bid for a ticket on ebay, with no intention of paying. But im not sure what would happen. Anyone willing to try or know what would happen.

  • 574 Garry // May 21, 2008 at 11:57 am

I must say that the attempt by MrWaits and Ticketmaster to out the touts is a good idea, but kind of backfired. Because now the scalper has two tickets (one of which he has to use, the other he can pass on), but that seems to have increased the price the scalper is looking for.

I’m thinking the solution to this is, when you buy 2 tickets you have to give your name and within a set number of hours, you should send the name of your friend (to be printed on the ticket). If your friend lets you down, you have to give back the ticket. Pretty much the same way airline tickets work.
Guarenteed to get rid of scalpers, except Ticketmaster.

    Various observations;

The ticketless system worked well during the short ‘06 tour & lines at the door moved quickly. This is not that big a deal, and they delayed start times of the shows a little to make sure the overwhelming majority of the herd were in their seats…

Utilizing free will and freedom of choice, I travelled almost a thousand miles to see 2 of the shows in ‘06 (my 1st time seeing TW after waiting over 20 years) and don’t regret it for a second. Yes, I wish TW would play in my own backyard, but Pedro & Maya are correct; TW is not Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy. WTF, this is not food, shelter, clothing, utilities, health, your children, etc., it’s entertainment and is highly discretionary. Either nut up and go, or quit whining…

In relative terms, ticket prices are quite reasonable on both sides of the pond. Think TW would have enough hard-core & monied fans that they would pay SIGNIFICANTLY more, particulary for the best seats? Look at the eye-gouging that goes on from The Police, Stones, Sting, McCartney, etc. These prices for TW are not as bad as they could be and are often driven more by the business model used by the promoter and others than the artist. Do the reality check…

While it’s very easy to pile onto Ticketcrapster (for so many reasons…) and equate dealing with them to watching a pig sodomize a monkey in the middle of main street, the majority of tickets DO get to the real fans. I got mediocre seats for both Phoenix shows, but there are lots and lots of entires on this blog of the lucky ones who made it into the first 5 or 10 rows (good for you! waive to me in the rafters…) Demand is huge, the math is simple, once again, deal with it…

The more astute sellers on EBay will set up the auction so you have to pay immediately. Even those who don’t will expect payment within 48 hours since this is a ‘perishable’ item, and if payment is not received they will re-list, report you as a non-paying bidder, and your account will be cancelled. Probably the only way to get at them is if many many people were to email EBay to get the pulled, and even that’s iffy at best. EBay has no legal or financial incentive whatsoever to follow someone elses guidlines…

No more whining people, get on with it & have a better day…

  • 576 epyrarw // May 21, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Can anyone confirm if the euro tickets start at 9am GMT?

  • 577 Shecky // May 21, 2008 at 12:17 pm

Garry - Interesting take, I believe they are printing the name of the purchaser on tickets for the upcomming NIN tour this summer, so that may be an option in the future.

No system is perfect. Although a few enterprising scalpers have figured out ‘work arounds,’ this system clearly kept the overwhelming majority of tickets out of the hands of scalpers, but it’s never going to be 100% and few out there other than TW are even trying…

    cheers all…..shecky

I think it’s Aiken Promotions that are in charge of Dublin. If so they know what they can charge, I think it is 25years since Tom played Dublin, he is a rare catch for most promoters, so they know that they could charge 200-250 euro and still fill 3 nights in record fast time. Im not saying that the artist is not partly to blame, but im sure he has better things to think about.
Thankfully Paris is on sale first, if i get a ticket for Paris, i may say f you to Dublin.
The Grand Rex is an amazing venue, saw Nick Cave there. If you havent been there, be prepared to be asked for a tip by the ushers, and yes they will ask with their hand out.

  • 592 Rogue // May 22, 2008 at 1:04 am

Well, he wouldn’t have sucha a big scalper problem, if he would just start to have tours with a normal amount of concerts and not follow those “i make myself rare” approach. If he would give more concerts, people wouldn’t pay so much for the tickets.
And the chosen European concerts are just a joke. With such short notice, to get flights to all those vacation hot spots will already cost a lot of money. The hotel rates are the highest in July (main vacation season).
Mr Waits just lost a lot of his aura …

  • 593 Rogue // May 22, 2008 at 1:07 am

Oh, and about the anti-scalper system - what happens, if someone gets ill or cannot make it for other reasons? Just lost the money? Or is there a system to transfer the tickets to other people (which by European law must actually be possible) - although this will be difficult on short notice (which will happen if someone gets ill).

  • 594 Signe // May 22, 2008 at 1:35 am

  • 595 Joe // May 22, 2008 at 2:33 am

I have waited many years for Tom Waits to return to Dublin (last played here in the 80s). How can a ticket price of at least €116.00 be justified. I believe it makes it the most expensive ticket of the tour.
I am seeing Bruce Springsteen tonight for €91.00 and kd lang in July (in a small venue) for €55.00.
I understand that all ticket prices for the tour have been agreed with Tom Wait’s manager and agents.
Come on and give us a break here - you’re great but don’t rip us off.

And I promise you guys once you have seen the show you would pay 10 times that.
I earn minimum wage! That is £5.60 an hour meaning I have to work 20 hours just to go and see Tom and the guys in Edinburgh.

  • 604 bene // May 22, 2008 at 4:30 am

It’s great to know that you’re coming back, but when I see the prices, I guess it’s gonna be like 8 years ago (or worst because it’s even more expensive this time):
great concert with seats (frustrating) and real fans in the rear back faraway from the stage because they could’nt afford to come near the stage with the rest of the shitty audience in tuxedo.wild ambiance.
    that’s really sorry.
and ok it’s worth it, but nobody can justify the fact that most people that love your music won’t be able to pay for it and hear it live, like me, that’s just great.

  • 605 nalA // May 22, 2008 at 4:37 am

Neither Ticketmaster or the venue do!

Can I get a ticket with a debit card? I don’t have a credit card and because of the anti-scalping measures I can’t even ask somebody else to get me my ticket.

Can’t believe I’m going to have to get a passport so I can go to a Tom Waits show… I’ve been avoiding it for years as I can’t find the time or money to travel abroad and can’t afford to run a car.

‘i think a lot of peolpe including the man himself forget that these shows are a rarity and like every other rarity are worth more’

OK. I’ve no problem with the amount Mr Waits tours, that’s fine, he is getting on, he doesn’t like it, he did the hard touring years ago. But it would appear that he is using the fact that it rarely happens to charge obscene prices. To tour so infrequently would suggest that he doesn’t need to do it for financial reasons, which makes it all the more puzzling why he has to charge so much.

  • 615 ab // May 22, 2008 at 7:09 am

i’ve been watching for last couple ofweeks and it seems the system in the states worked perfectly but with this brief trip to europe (where i have a suspicion you are vastly more popular) most people will end up paying so much we might as well have booked a flight and seen several concerts in the states which possibly haven’t sold out yet.
i could have booked tickets for 10 gigs in the states now i’ll be lucky if i can get in one!
i think the general feeling of dissapointment over here will outweigh any excitement.

As for “whining” - I would say a music fan is someone who goes to a concert at least once a month, and frequently, more often. Tell me now that €100 each time is acceptable.
I realise the rarity of Tom Waits performances, but this price also sets a precedent, and thus pushes ticket prices for everything up and up.

  • 625 Evanna // May 22, 2008 at 8:32 am

It’s a lot of money to pay, yes - but think what they are charging for the likes of Celine Dion and other toss here in Ireland?…now that’s a rip off! I’ve waited my entire adult life to get the opportunity to see Tom Waits live. Over a hundred is a lot of money but I don’t think it’s an outrageous amount to pay and it certainly wouldn’t put me off trying! I’ve pissed away a lot of money in my life, on a lot less worthwhile things. Finally getting to see the man - I’d consider that money well spent.

  • 643 Jeff // May 22, 2008 at 6:19 pm

All the whining is funny. Let’s be real for a minute. This is not a well fare program. Tom Waits is an entertainer, the most genius one of our generation I would submit. How could seeing him in the flesh possibly be cheap?
I am a lucky duck and am flying from the east coast to El Paso and to Birmingham. What do I care about ticketmaster? They just sell me tickets for an agreed upon price. This is a very simple supply and demand situation.
So the problem (if you want to call it that) is that there a plenty of Tom Waits fans, like myself, that are only too happy to “nut up”. I could not believe that I was able to get tickets for such a reasonable price. The ticketmaster strategy is working like a charm. The venues are brilliant. Thank you Tom, you did everything you could to get tickets into the hands of your fans. This counts among the experience of a life time.
Besides the coin I am dropping into my kids college fund this is easily the best investment I will make this year, no close thirds. I spend this money with a smile.

Mårten: Så lite så, bättre lycka nästa gång.

Should be added though that I used the italian version of the site, since I expected it to work better than the english one - that might explain why I got my tickets without any hassel.

  • 655 Frank // May 23, 2008 at 3:38 am

The english version of ticketone was a joke. Here’s my story. At 09:00 the tickets should have been available, and sure enough, that is what the site said, but nowhere on the site it was possible to purchase any tickets. The page displayed when clicking the link just had the info tab. So I started refreshing this page, as well as getting on the phone to italy, which of course was busy. Around 09:30 the tickets-tab showed up! Ok, did my choice and clicked “add to cart”. Just to get a big red sign saying “Insert cart error”……… I tried again and again and again, same same. Around 10:00 i finally got redirected to my cart, or rather the queue to my cart, with 80-something before me in line. Waited, and waited, and when it was my “turn”, the page bugged out with some javascript error! So I had to redo it all again, thinking, im so screwed, i will never get any tickets… Same procedure, with a number of failed “add to cart”s i finally got to check out my tickets(rediculously expensive btw) SECTION:PLBA ROW:5 SEAT:33:34. Sooooo sweeeet! For your information, im from Sweden and I used a Visa. Cya in Milan in July!!!!

Awful ticket experience in Atlanta last night…waited in three separate lines for 1 1/2 hours dealing with the paperless ticket policy despite having credit card, driver’s license and email confirmation. The show started over an hour late because of the Ticketmaster fiasco.

Waits and the band were superb once we finally got in.

  • 678 Richard // Jul 6, 2008 at 9:12 am

    What is wrong with England?

    Apart from the obvious.

I can’t afford to get to Ireland or Scotland. Plus it’s too expensive to drive and buy a ticket.

Don’t tour for years, then favour the celts. They get all the good things. Chips on their shoulders, a history, some nice craft things…

    Man. Pff.

  • 679 Jeni // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Just got back to Raleigh after seeing Tom at Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre last night, and all I can say is, Wow! Not only is the venue itself just incredible, Tom made it worth every penny of the ticket price and every minute of the drive.

Both of us had always wanted to see him live and never had, so it was a real treat to have 7th-row seats. His voice was in top form and his band was just amazing. Talented, rehearsed musicians, one and all. Neat also that two of his sons were on stage with him — one the drummer/percussionist, one who played some oboe. How cool for all of them.

Although the show did start quite late, it was two solid hours of greatness and variety. And the disco- ball hat is super cool!

I laughed, I cried (”Wherever You Lay Your Head,” I stomped, I yelled, I screamed for an encore (which we got). It was truly a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you, Tom!

My husband will soon post a set list as best as we can remember it.

  • 680 Bill Kahler // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:46 pm

Before the show started there was music playing - sounded a but odd. No surprise here but it was actually coming out of this large array of megaphone/bullhorns! A mono signal with only mids, no lows or highs, sounded like a bad dream!

Tom is really on his game for this tour. I saw him last year at the Tabernacle in Atlanta and this year’s show was ten times better. Great staging, sound, theatrics. Fantastic show! The band was excellent and at times sounded like a small orchestra and Tom was doing a sort of Waits only style of conducting. Sometimes reminded me of a warped Broadway production!

He was up on a small circular stage that looked like a piece of antique discarded circus equipment and the lighting circle overhead was tilted so the shadows it cast were long and eerie. Tom looked like he was a skinny 7 feet tall. Around the stage he was on were some small round lights that reminded me of a rundown midway - they were a little crooked and none of them ever seemed to be lit all at once.

Casey Waits played drums and had a huge kit with tons of odd ball things around it. The keyboard player had a couple keyboards sitting inside of a hollowed out B3 looking cabinet. Some of the sounds were bizarre as you might expect. It was actually very cool how close the sound was to the strange atmospheres on his records.

Thee was a guy out front who played sax (sometimes two at once), harmonica, and guitar. Sullivan Waits came out and joined him a couple times playing clarinet. Must be odd touring with your dad and playing “… we’re all gonna be dead in the ground” every night.

The musicians were really great and the guitar player played electric and acoustic and even a couple flamenco styled things. A guest guitarist came out for a few numbers - Larry Taylor. Sorry I didn’t get all the names of the members.

    There was no oboe.

Tons of cool visuals in this show. A flickering lightbulb dropped down for a song, dust or powder created a fog around Waits as he stomped, a bunch of glitter rained down and a mirrored hat shined like a disco ball. Waits was very animated through the whole show with his occasional odd and funny stories.

Tom played a little bit of guitar, some piano and pump organ but mostly stood in the center of his stage and lead the whole thing like a ringleader conductor. A drunk guy sitting behind me said “What the hell is that?” along with a bunch of other comments. One of his comments I totally agree with: “Man, Tom Waits is brilliant!”

  • 681 Andrea // Jul 7, 2008 at 1:37 am

This message is for Mr. Waits

I just wanted to say that I think the price being charged for the concert tickets in Dublin is an absolute disgrace and to add insult to injury ticketmaster now have fans in a bidding war for additional tickets. I have been a fan for many many years but I now find myself totally sickened by this greed. As a result i am donating my ticket money to Focus Ireland and hopefully contribute to easing someone elses struggle to put a roof over their head instead of letting these shower of bastard get their grubby little hands on it.

  • 683 Bourbon Cowboy // Jul 7, 2008 at 8:46 am

First things first; the Fox show in Atlanta was awesome. Tom never “phones it in”. He “empties his bucket”… Anyone want more cliches.

That said, the whole “anti-scalper” crusade needs to be addressed. Like most fans, I tried and succeeded at buying 4 tickets. I purchased two “sets’ of 2 via different credit cards and separate transactions (15 minutes between them). When I arrived at the Fox (with my three guests) I was informed ticketmaster had (unilaterally) cancelled the second transaction. They did not notify me, and my Visa account was not credited until five weeks AFTER my (authorized/approved) purchase . I had to take a cab home (3 miles from the venue) get my Visa statement and work with the Fox Theatre “ticket resolution” staff - who by the way were AWESOME as well. The thing is, what is the difference between Ticketmaster and a “scalper”? They charge $15-$20 per transaction and they held my money for 5 weeks. Given Tom’s affinity for seedy hustlers the like, you’d think he’d be on the side of the street level guy, as opposed to the corporate pimps at Ticketmaster. But all’s well that ends well. I’m pretty sure most of the folks got into the show (we purchased the “available” tickets, from the previously cancelled orders. This delayed the start about an hour, as Tom Was (reportedly) aware of the SNAFU and wanted to be sure everyone was seated before performing. I think the 2006 show at the Tabernacle was better, but I’ll take #2 Tom Waits show over a #1 anybody else.

  • 684 Gun Street Girl // Jul 7, 2008 at 10:43 am

I know some people said that they had wished for actual (normal) ticket stubs and had only a cheap-o print-out to take home, well–seems like the folks that waited in the long lines to resolve ticket “issues” in Atlanta got actual tickets! It’s a small thing, but it made some people happy.

I saw the show in Atlanta, Wow!!!!!!!!!!! amazing!!!!!!!! it was my first Tom Waits concert and it exceeded my expectations (and they wher pretty high), I came all the way from Mexico City just for the concert, absolutely worth it, best show I ever seen!!!!!!!!!!

  • 686 ab // Jul 7, 2008 at 5:02 pm

i’m with bourbon cowboy on the point of tom’s affinity with street hustlers and my first reaction was that this would be better than not getting in at all, however i did get in to all of the edinburgh and dublin dates and if the measures were not in place i’m sure that would have not been the case.
compared to the last visit to the uk this method was indeed a great success.
i will be seeing 3 shows for what it cost me to see one last time. well done please do this again.
keep up the prices to market level as do the very wise rolling stones.

I have always wanted to give it to him (sice I made it). And now, for the first time, I have a little chance do it.
I just need some help. I know that what I’m asking is difficult.

    Thank you very much.

I felt painfully embarrassed to be almost forced to sit down, while Tom was working so hard in the 2 shows I was lucky enough to get tix for. I surely hope there is a next time tour and they rip the seats out of the theatres where Tom plays. There should be no one(except for the lame) sitting in the presence of poetic genius. That doesn’t mean you should also sing along, except for Innocent When You Dream. Y’all should get out more, so you’d know how to respond to a stellar performance. And while I’m thinking about it, just who would you give an ovation to? Would John Lennon or Duane Allman have to rise from the grave to get you off your ass?

  • 690 Shimster // Jul 30, 2008 at 4:24 am

I was at Edinburgh on 28th July.I don’t agree with most of the fuss about ticket prices and venues. I thought £100 a ticket for a full on 2.5 hour show performed at full tilt was perfectly acceptable.I live near Manchester so I could fly on a budget carrier to virtually all the venues on the European leg of the tour. I suspect this applies to most people. The i.d.issue wasn’t a big deal. The only quibble I have is the two ticket rule.I took my wife to the Edinburgh gig but also wanted to take my 15 year old son who has really got into Tom Waits in the last year. I did think about buying tickets for another venue but was told by Ticketmaster that this would probably breach the two ticket rule. From what I’ve witnessed I reckon that if Tom Waits did another 15 date tour of Europe in the near future with the same ticketing policy the gigs would once again sell out in minutes.I’ve waited 25 years to see him live and it was worth every second. The big issue is whether his younger fans who are growing in number will get the chance to see him live. I’ve seen many of the so-called great performers and Tom Waits is the most original and entertaining. So come on Tom, one more time for the kids (and the Rainfrogs).

Tom Waits in the Rat Cellar, Pheonix Park, Dublin. . .A Stunning performance , a real showman. To be able to reproduce the authentic sounds of his huge record collection with ease on stage, and then add some . Beautiful . 3,000 worshippers knew he was worth every cent/penny, worth all the stress racebooking the seats and more than worth all the hassle which meant bringing along your passport to get in . Passport control for a gig? What a brilliant idea..I only wish I could reside in such a nation where artistry, picture painting ,lyrics, showmanship, harmonies and great humour were everyday. Taking a pinch of the stage mannerisms of Ian Drury and applying it to a back catalogue of such depth presented us with a spectacle it is simply too hard to describe here. New songs or old Tom Waits continues to amaze us all and maybe even himself.

  • 696 Mary // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:10 am

I’m bereft - I was at the concert in the Ratcellar last night in Dublin. It was phenomenally generous, eclectic and sparkling performance. I’ve waited 23 years to see him and I don’t think my experience could have been bettered (short of being invited back stage but then I’ve been prone to teenage longing for the past 24 hours). I returned to London to work this morning and I actually feel grief - I want to be in Dublin, at the same concert again tonight to savour every move, gesture, guttural groan that man offers. Is there anyone else feeling like me after that concert last night?

  • 697 Molly // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:39 pm

  • 699 Mary // Aug 1, 2008 at 4:24 am

I have found a ‘reality’ and am no longer in trance but I will never forget this concert. As someone who travelled to London 4 years ago to try and get a ‘return’ ticket (there were 6 ‘returns’ and I was ‘not so lucky’ 7th in the queue) and was prepared to pay £250 (all I could afford) to get in, I am so grateful to Tom for bringing in the anti-tout measures. There’s no way I would have been able to see him had he not brought these measures in. I only found out he was touring in Europe at 9.40 a.m on the day of sale. I was lucky. In the previous system, I would most definitely have missed out. Ordinary fans have an exponentially higher chance to get to see him. I can’t quite believe that Tom might read these messages but if you do, thank you from the magma of my heart.

  • 700 Horse // Aug 1, 2008 at 1:14 pm

How much would you pay to drive the first automobile or fly the first plane? Well I saw the one and only Tom Waits for a grand sum of £235 which included train ticket accommodation and a number of superb malt whiskies in Edinburgh. A bargain methinks roll on 2012 or 2025

If I have one regret about the concert on the 30th, it’s that I didn’ t go on the 31st and 1st, as well. A show in the true meaning of the word. Vaudeville, a fairground, a German speigeltent, we could have been at any of these. Dust billowing from the floor each time he stomped (and he did plenty of stomping), we had glitter (the doom is still to come, I suppose), a magnificent band, clever lighting and a performance timed to perfection. Innocent when you dream (each time I hear the song, I imagine Marlene Dietrich singing it). I am blessed to have been present, surrounded by good singers and faultless “clap-alongers”, I know I have been at an event that I will never witness again. From my 11-month- old grandson, who goes into spasms of dancing, when he hears ice-cream man, my friend Martha, who is convinced Tom wrote a song for her, my wife and daughters who are convinced Tom wrote all his songs for them and myself who is just convinced. Thanks for the best concert I have attended in 34 years of live music. I couldn’t sleep Wedns night, going over the music again and again, in my head. Nobody could put a price on the enjoyment I got from the show. The entrance fee was a pittance in comparison.

  • 703 Bela // Aug 2, 2008 at 1:56 pm

I was in Dublin on 30 July - that was three nights ago and I’m still recovering from a \knock-out\ spell. After so many years of loving his music and missing the rare opportunities when he came to Europe, this was the dream of a lifetime come true. Now, if I was unable to go to another gig for the rest of my life, well it wouldn’t matter… thanks to Tom Waits and his genious/generous performance. If admiration and love are blessings then Tom is surely a blessed man - all the people that were given the opportunity to witness this show are surely in a state of grace even after days have gone by… Witnessing a performance like this one makes life worthwhile. Forever, Tom, thanks.

Lucky enough to be at last Dublin concert. Amazing!

Thanks a million Tom and all.

Please, please, pretty please could you put out a dvd showing the best bits/bits and pieces from each of the shows?? It would be genuinely lovely to have a momento.

Bought my first TW record more than 25 years ago (I’m 38 now) after seeing him do “The piano has been drinking” on the Irish version of Johnny Carson.

Nice to be able to explain to my 4/6yr old daughters last week that I was going to see the funny man who sings “Little drop of poison” in Shrek.

Liked the idea of the “scalping for charity” too. Does Tom ever make anything signed available for fans (to buy for charity)?I’d imagine if there was a reputable outlet to buy say signed posters (where the money goes to charity) it would be a great money making opportunity.

  • 720 chad // Aug 7, 2008 at 5:25 am

anti scalping is all well & good if it means exactly that but still tickets were being sold in vast numbers on ebay by touts & opportunists for large sums…..i can still remember sad faces from the steps of the apollo in london back in 2004 where some unlucky punters were let down by ‘collect in person’ ebayers & similar. the ticket idea in principle is good but needs tweaking to prevent profiteering…..got bored with reading so many ‘bought a pair of tickets but my mate can’t go now’ tales…..

I was at Edinburgh and Dublin. What an excellent show!! Thanks to whoever was organising the tour. You’ve done a great job. I flew 3000 miles to see him and my dreams have come true. Tom is on top of his game. I hope he doesn’t get too tired to let us have another opportunity to see him live again.

  • 725 The Raven // Aug 9, 2008 at 1:42 am

Can I just say, I was at the Dublin final show, and it was outstanding. I had to raid the savings for the show, travel almost 200miles to get there, but it was allllll worth it.

I am especially happy that the self-centred “there’s-nowhere-in-the-world-except” London crowd DIDN’T GET THE CREAM OF THE GIGS!

Up yer hole with a big jam roll, you southern soft shites! We whupped yer asses on this one!!!

1.anyone lazy enough not to make it to paris, edinburgh or dublin, can’t be that great a fan.
most people in western europe were within 4 to 500 miles of a concert.
2.if you’ve seen tom in a theatre you’d know what a terrible idea it would be for an arena gig.
3.the ratcellar was around 4 to 5000 and didn’t really work as a venue. it also didn’t totally sell out which suggests demand was met.
    5. i do feel for the fans in australia, and scandinavia particularly, a lot of whom made the journey.
    6.london isn’t the centre of anyone’s world.
7.i did cover about 1000 miles this tour and also put it on the credit card. will have to work it off.
8.totally sick of reading comments from people who can’t be bothered to make an exception for the occasion.
9.will save for hopefully possible trip to scandinavia next time…. if there is a next time!!!!
    10. the o2 arena?? imaginative.
