Tom Waits Announces European Tour

By Gina · 496 Comments

Tom Waits plays the ‘Glitter and Doom’ tour through Europe this summer

Following ‘Glitter and Doom’s 13 U.S. shows that open in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday 17th June, America’s legendary songwriter and performer Tom Waits brings his ‘Glitter and Doom’ tour to Europe this summer, playing shows that include the Grammy-award winning artist’s first-ever concerts in Spain and the Czech Republic. The European schedule opens in Spain’s San Sebastian on Saturday 12th July and finishes in Dublin on Saturday 1st August.

“I have a stellar band: Larry Taylor (*editor note:  due to a family emergency, upright bass player Larry Taylor was unable to join the tour and was subsequently replaced by Seth Ford-Young), Patrick Warren (keyboards), Omar Torrez (guitars), Vincent Henry (woodwinds) and Casey Waits (drums and percussion)”, says Waits. “They play with racecar precision and they are all true conjurers. I’m doing songs with them I’ve never attempted outside the studio. They are all multi-instrumentalists and they polka like real men.”

The European tour will also be subject to new anti-scalper plans, thus attempting to ensure that every fan will pay only face value (plus normal service and handling fees) for the tickets. They will be limited to two per person with the purchaser’s name – and name of their plus one – printed on the ticket. Ticket-holders will need photo ID corresponding to the names on the tickets to gain access to the venues. NO FUCKING ENGLAND GIGS? thats taking the piss!

  • 2 John // May 21, 2008 at 8:21 am

No Gigs in England. I’m gutted - I have no chance of getting a ticket for Dublin or Edinburgh.

  • 3 Phil // May 21, 2008 at 8:24 am

I saw Tom play the Grand Rex back in 2000 - great intimate venue. Would love to go back but I’m aiming for Edinburgh this time. Disappointed there’s no London gig but he did play there in recent years so I guess it’s fair to look elsewhere.

  • 4 Desroy Mallard // May 21, 2008 at 9:08 am

No England shows? What a massive letdown.

  • 5 Tue // May 21, 2008 at 9:13 am

    no denmark shows…

    disappointed.

some countries are more blessed by him than others.
    time for scandinavia, tom.

  • 6 Karoline // May 21, 2008 at 10:17 am

I am so depressed…..Im a huge fan and I simply cannot afford to go to scotland or dublin or anywhere else but London for that matter. Whats wrong with us folks in England, or London. Do you not like us Tom?????????

  • 7 Jon // May 21, 2008 at 10:18 am

I have been online for days in anticipation of a London date. Gutted beyond believe!!!!!

  • 8 RP // May 21, 2008 at 10:38 am

Does the 9:00 AM refer to local time at the different locations?

  • 9 Peter Olah // May 21, 2008 at 10:39 am

I’m soory for you guys in London but I think you have to accept that. In other ways you are blessed with concerts I can only dream of here in Hungary. Usually Austria is the only destination I can afford to travel to but this time I’m really keen on going to Prague. It’s nearly 700km by car but it’s maybe a once in a lifetime chance for me to see Tom Waits and I won’t gamble on that.

I think it’s a good thing that he goes to places he hasn’t been to before. It’s simply a nice gift for the people there.

I’m already very happy about the fact that he’s coming to Europe at all.

So, don’t hang down your heads you English and Danish folks and try to make it to the next nearest place to your hometown :)

    Cheers

    Peter

  • 10 Nick // May 21, 2008 at 10:41 am

Tom Waits hasn’t played in Scotland for over 20 years (last show was in November 1987); he played in London in 2004…

I know it might feel disappointing to have no English dates scheduled on this tour, but England have seen more of him than Scotland has recently. The bottom line is… he can choose to play (and not play) wherever he wants and no one really has serious grounds for complaining about it.

  • 11 Steve P // May 21, 2008 at 11:39 am

Playing in a bloody tent here in Ireland. That’ll be awful. Also what happens if your plus one decides not to go and you genuinely wish to take another mate?

  • 12 rosbeef // May 21, 2008 at 11:52 am

I love tom waits, and would love to see the man play live- hes the only living artist left that i truly want to see. However, I find it pretty insulting that the shows in the UK and europe are so expensive….it isnt even funny.

If i lived in texas, or kentucky it would cost me £40 (about $80) to see Tom. Here it will cost me £95-140. How can you possibly justify that much of a price hike? Add to the fact that travelling to a show costs a whole bunch of money, accomodation and you are looking at almost £450 just to watch tom with a friend or a partner.

With ticket prices that high you don’t need any measures to beat the scalpers-the price is already a scalpers price. When you consider it cost half of one ticket to a uk show to see bjork….i just can’t see how it can be justified. Very disapointing.

  • 13 sterretje // May 21, 2008 at 11:59 am

any chance that there are some other dates announced or is this just it? Cause i would love to see him come to Belgium, closest for me is Paris then but i will probably not even get a shot at buying tickets there, bummer , i’ve never seen him life and he is the only artist i still want to see live (the other favorites i had a chance of seeing already)

  • 14 SJ // May 21, 2008 at 1:13 pm

My girlfriend and I will probably end up paying close to 2000 euro in total to see him (our summer vacation constantly clashes with both the US and Europe dates), I wish I lived closer.

Anyone have any idea what the tickets are going to cost in Spain?

  • 15 Evr // May 21, 2008 at 1:26 pm

My understanding is that the purchasers name is on the tickets and has to be present with matching ID obviously. There only has to be “a” plus one at time of entry but not necessarily named ? Am I wrong?

  • 16 Marty // May 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm

no england gig……. He hasn’t done a gig in Australia since 1978, hows that for a long wait. whats wrong with us Tom?

  • 17 Eva // May 21, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Welcome to Europe Tom! Seeing your performance meens the world to me, so I`ll go wherever I can get a ticket:)
    Next time

  • 18 Eva // May 21, 2008 at 4:55 pm

Next time you can play with the midnight sun in your eyes, just like Dylan did a couple of years ago…

  • 19 Mac // May 21, 2008 at 9:36 pm

What? Not a single show in scandinavia? This sucks, come on.

  • 20 Rogue // May 21, 2008 at 10:19 pm

This really sucks. In vacation prime time he gives concerts only in vacation hot spots, meaning that if you do not come from one of the cities, travel and accomodation alone will cost a fortune - to which the tickets will ad (bzw., where did you get the infos about the ticket prices - the webpages seem to have no infos yet about this?).
No concerts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia, but several in the same cities? This really really sucks.
I know that Tom Waits is a bit eccentric, but this will p.. off so many fans.
I really looked forward to see Mr. Waits after 15 years of listening to his music. But seems, that will never happen.

  • 21 Rogue // May 21, 2008 at 10:55 pm

Oh, and these fancy anti-scalper plans: What happens if one of the persons gets ill or cannot make it to a concert? Is the money for the ticket then just lost? Or is there a chance to change the name on the ticket? But what if someone gets ill on short notice (which will be the normal case)? thrown away money?

  • 22 CortoMaltese // May 21, 2008 at 11:40 pm

Traveled longer distances to see worse bands. From Croatian point of view, Milan will be just fine. And all of you who are complaining, do you really think that he can visit every place on godamn earth??

  • 23 Tomeu Gomila // May 22, 2008 at 12:09 am

    To SJ:
Tickets in Spain will cost from 100 to 125€

Can´t believe londoners are complaining after his astonishing show at Hammersmith less than four years ago. Don´t you remember how he joked at the audience about his long absence:

    “Yeah, I know, I know I know: seventeen years…
    But you look good!.
    …..
    The three stages in life:
    Youth…
    Middle Age……….
….and the “You look good” stage”

It took him less than a minute to have the whole audience on his pocket (as we say in Spain)

Meanwhile in Mallorca, we have officially being waiting for him via the Waiting for Waits festival (started in July 2001).

It will be frustrating to see he is only half an hour by plane from us in mid-July…

  • 24 Rogue // May 22, 2008 at 1:11 am

This is just a joke. Just checked several flight and hotel costs - with such a short notice time, flights and hotels are already very expensive. And no artist, even Mr Waits is worth several hundreds of Euros …
And about the anti-scalper system. If Mr. Waits would just start to give make normal tours with a decent amount of concerts and not follow the “I am so cool, I make myself rare” approach, ticket prices would not go so hight on the secondary market. So he is the reason, why this happens. Now he uses an unfriendly and legally doubtful system (there must be a way to transfer tickets on short notice) …

I wish fans would boycott the concerts. This is a total joke.

  • 25 FRANCESC SOLÉ // May 22, 2008 at 2:57 am

    Don’t tell me about England!!!
I live in Spain and I’ve been waiting my whole life!!!

  • 26 Mac // May 22, 2008 at 4:04 am

To Mr Waits and the Tour manager; Please consider adding at least one show in scandinavia. Waits shows are few and far between.

  • 27 Jo Baltimore // May 22, 2008 at 4:28 am

ILl be travelling from the states.. complain about costs to me will ya!

  • 28 Anders // May 22, 2008 at 6:25 am

The anti scalper precautions are just ridiculous. We are three friends, from Copenhagen, fans for 20+ years and we would like to see the show together, as we have been listening to the albums together. Not only do we have to scramble to put together flights and hotels in the peak holiday season, but to get three tickets (not two) will be difficult, even if we succeed, the likelyhood of us actually sitting together is very small. In my opinion this is a slap in the face of the core customers and fans, who have been buying albums for years. My feeling right now: Fuck it, it’s not worth it. We went 20 years without seeing Tom Waits live, we’ll probably survive if we never do. With the sort of trouble and expense we’d need to go through to finally make this happen I wonder if the show would actually live up to ones expectations. :-(

  • 29 Petter Solberg // May 22, 2008 at 6:44 am

    Hei Anders,

I agree with you that there is some huge problems with the Paperless Ticket system which will exclude a lot of “real” fans. I think it is a good thing that they try to get rid of the scalpers, but at the same time they seem to have taken a lot of compromises. For instance the credit card thing may complicate things. People are really taking a risk when they have to type in their friend’s name on the extra ticket. If your friend pulls out last-minute, there’s no point in asking someone else to go with you, cause the tickets are useless with someone else’s name on it.

Is this really the best way to solve the problem with scalpers?

  • 30 mark adrian // May 22, 2008 at 6:52 am

    Hi .
recently I’ve discovered Tom Waits and was looking forward to seeing him,but as their no English dates I can’t. Shame! Then I saw the ticket prices for Dublin and Edinburgh £95! Don’t you guys know there’s a recession on ? We’re not all millionaires you know!

  • 31 Petter Solberg // May 22, 2008 at 7:00 am

A city like London are often the first choice when the big artists are touring, so I actually think it is a good thing that Tom Waits chooses a different route this time around. I think Edinburgh is a good (and surprising) choice. It’s a great city. And beside, no matter where TW would choose to play, there would always be a lot of people who would have to travel from somewhere else to see him. The same goes for London, New York, Kristiansand

  • 32 liessa // May 22, 2008 at 7:13 am

    Aren’t you comming to Belgium?
Last time you came al the famous people took the tickets so the real fans weren’t even there!
    and now you’re not comming?
That’s ridiculous! You’re so famous and than you play only in some countrys I don’t think that’s fair!
Sorry but that’s how I feel and I think I’m not alone!

  • 33 Mac // May 22, 2008 at 7:14 am

Having to travel is one thing, halfway across europe is a bit much I think. First of all there’s the ticket problem. Most shows sell out in minutes and most of(not all) the ticket offices won’t sell to international customers except over the phone. Second of all it’s the amount of time I have to take off work. With no shows in scandinavia I’ll have to sit this one out. Maybe Mr Waits will be back some day, maybe not. I saw him back in ‘99 and it was the best I’ve ever seen. Still is. Guess I’ll have to count myself lucky to have seen him at least once.

  • 34 Patrick Hoornaert // May 22, 2008 at 7:29 am

For the 500 000 fans who won’t be able to see him play live, let’s hope he releases a good DVD of one of his great concerts of this or previous tour ! But, you’re more than welcome to come back to Belgium, Tom !

  • 35 BOB // May 22, 2008 at 7:32 am

Hi Tom, we are waiting for you here in Argentina
Will you come to play to Buenos Aires?
You know how much we care about you and your music.
We don´t give up hope. See you soon!!! See you soon?

  • 36 craig // May 22, 2008 at 7:34 am

Edinburgh is a great choice. I only hope i can get 2 tickets - no doubt huge demand and hiked up prices sadly. Been a fan for 20 years and have spread tom’s words to many. Moaners from London…well they’re just moaners from London.

  • 37 Gerry // May 22, 2008 at 7:54 am

£95 a ticket? Don’t try and justify prices like this by talking about small scale touring. Nick Cave only plays small tours but doesn’t charge rip off prices like this. Time to think of your fan base and not your wallet Mr Waits. You want to make more money fine, try charging a lower ticket price and playing more venues. Does the concept of a regular world tour not appeal……

  • 38 Anders // May 22, 2008 at 8:21 am

£95 for the ticket, £140 for return flights from Copenhagen, a hotelroom is probably £80-100, expenses (meals/drinks) is another £100 all that is fine, expensive, but ok for a once in a lifetime experience for a fan of 20+ years. I bought all the albums on vinyl, then rebought them all on cd, and I have enjoyed listening to them, so I am happy to spend (now that I have finally reached an age where I can allow myself such extravagances - but I feel sorry for the younger fans who might not have the means). But to think that in order to actually do so I can’t bring my buddies, as it is not possible to buy three tickets? Frankly it’s infantile and offensive. I have been thinking about it now for a little while, and I think mr Waits can have his tour without my presence.

  • 39 Heidi // May 22, 2008 at 9:13 am

Anyone who knows if 9.00 AM refer to local time at the different locations?

  • 40 Anders // May 22, 2008 at 9:15 am

Heidi. I am certain it does. Any thing else would be silly.

  • 41 Rogue // May 22, 2008 at 9:26 am

Yes, but since the prices, the anti-scalping system and the whole setup of the tour are silly, why shouldn’t they also not refer to local time?

  • 42 Anders // May 22, 2008 at 9:29 am

he he…good point. Now wouldn’t that be a great trick to play on fans. Tickets go on sale in various locations at 9pm Pacific Daylight Time!!! Go figure…

  • 45 Unai Lilly // May 22, 2008 at 12:07 pm

Some of us have been waiting years to see Tom Waits in Spain,

others had to go to London/Amsterdam four years ago (one of my best experiennçce ever!) to see him live, finally we got the chance!!!

At least we had the great “waiting for waits” festival, during eight years, where we could see Marc Ribot, Andrew Bird, Robyn Hitchcock, Jesca Hoop, Hugo Race…

So close to Mallorca, so close…

    Enjoy the shows!!!

  • 46 Frode Fosse Tandsether // May 22, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Gee, I remember the time when I just walked down the street to Konserthuset (Oslo, Norway) and bought my ticket to his show. That was in ‘85.
Before the show he had a press conference where anyone could participate - lotsa fun there! After that he stood up for a photo session beside a lamp post on a street nearby. Those were the days….

  • 47 Petr Vavra // May 22, 2008 at 12:42 pm

oh boy, i can’t believe tom waits is finally coming to prague! and two nights!! i am so excited! just wish the venue weren’t an old communist congress centre where you can’t smoke.. (officially, not that they could stop me..)

  • 48 Nuno // May 22, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Quit whining! He’s never been to Portugal once!

    According to this http://www.teatroarcimboldi.it/evento.php?pagina=2&evento=87

Prices range from 90 to 125 euros according to seats.
I suppose prices will not vary much from place to place.

And I hope there aren’t many spanish fans…

  • 49 John // May 22, 2008 at 6:02 pm

When it says ticket sales starts at 9:00 AM, what timezone does it mean?

  • 50 Louise // May 22, 2008 at 7:15 pm

I was ecstatic when I saw the headline, and now I’m about ready to cry… Scandinavia? Please? Or Benelux? Germany, even…? It’s not like the tickets wouldn’t sell out in a heartbeat if another date was added… Think about it. Adding the flight, accommodation expenses etc., there’s no way I could get to any of these places in Europe for less than £400… So why not just charge me half that in Copenhagen? Please?

  • 58 Jonas // May 23, 2008 at 4:57 am

Julian: Same here. I ordered two tickets at ticketone.it this morning. Got a confirmation e-mail but no date filled in. I sent an e-mail to ticketone and asked them to confirm the date for me, but they haven’t answered me yet. Guess they are quite busy today. Anyway I’m glad to hear I ain’t the only one not getting the date on my confirmation e-mail.

  • 59 Kristoffer // May 23, 2008 at 5:37 am

    To Julian and Jonas.

I got the same problem as well. However, if you log on to ticketone.it; go to order history; search; and click the blue enlargement for more info, you will see the date, the place and the price.. and more.

I agree on that they should give us some kind of better reciept. I hope you recieve answers from them.

PS: I see that on my order detail on their site, it says: “Pick-up at the Venue Box Office (Will Call)” - will they call me? Anyone got more info about this?

    Let’s get controversial:

Tom Waits is not the Rolling Stones.

    I’m glad he:

    1.doesn’t do arenas
    2.takes his time
3.his shows and albums are very consistent in quality (high)

All of these things are correlated

He’s playing Milan, so close to home for once. I really wanted to go but…110-150 € for 1 ticket? I simply can’t afford it. I’m sure it would be totally worth it but that’s what I earn in a week.
Oh well, I will have to make do with memories of my 1987 show at the Hammersmith Odeon for a little longer.

  • 73 Zak // May 23, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Come on Tom, who you playin for? $85 tickets, roughly $200 a show for me and the lady.

  • 74 Tim // May 23, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Oh dear god PLEASE send that man on a vacation to Hawaii to play a show or two. I’d sell my left nut to see him play in a smokey little bar like Anna Bannana’s. Seriously, I’d pay that $85 a pop to see him, more than that even, but I can’t be flyin’ from the middle of the frickin’ ocean to TX or AZ or any other place. I got a day job.

  • 75 Horse // May 24, 2008 at 1:14 am

Sack Tom’s management they can’t appear to do simple arithmatic. US tickets in dollars are $85
Europe are $120 and Scotland are $190. We need a new tariff or an explanation why you hate Scotland??

  • 76 John // May 24, 2008 at 2:07 am

Dear Tom Waits, you are truly an asshole of global proportions. Playing such few small places in Europe and charging horrendous prices and making it impossible for true fans to purchase tickets because of the anti-scalper rules really pisses me off! And I am surely not alone. Many of your fans have been waiting literally for decades to see you, and you cannot be bothered to play a few more shows or play in bigger venues. Thank you, asshole!

  • 77 Kristoffer // May 24, 2008 at 2:27 am

    Oh, please! Save yourself.

He play 14 shows in Europe - much more than i had ever hoped for. And Waits has never been a big-stage-man anyway, so don´t complain about him not playing on a big stage or something like that.

The dollar is quite weak, hence some of the price differeince (i guess?). In addition, some locations, like expencive opera houses, take a lot of money in their own pocket i would think , for lending out their halls.

This is just my guessings. My main point is that we should be happy that he is actually going to Europe, and not focus on the price of the tickets which is actually not _that_ insane, considering.. I myself, for example, paid over 400$ (not from scalpers) to see The Rolling Stones in Norway two years ago - and they played for 20. 000, in the open; not for 2.000 in a opera house.

Can´t wait to see you, Tom!

  • 78 Dangerous Dave // May 24, 2008 at 3:50 am

Regarding all the whining about England not getting a visit- Common people, lighten up- just how far is it to Edinburgh from anywhere in England?? Maybe 500 miles tops.
I am travelling close to 1500km to see Tom in Birmingham-thats 900 miles each way. so dont complain, just be thankful that you are that close to a venue.
    D.D.

  • 79 ross muggivan // May 24, 2008 at 7:07 am

i am so pissed off. i love tom waits i lived in barcelona for 2 year and every day i would play tom in the bar i worked. 1 day i played him for 8 hours straight.
and now i am in toronto i dont have the money to see him fuck that.

  • 80 Eoghan // May 24, 2008 at 7:09 am

    Come on Tom!
Whats that John guy on about - Tom is the performer and he’s performing where he wants to perform - fair play!

  • 81 Peter Olah // May 24, 2008 at 7:25 am

It’s great on one hand that Tom Waits is coming to Europe but I really hope that the tix for Prague won’t be that expensive. I paid 99 euros for Neil Young in Vienna but those were already the best tickets and the venue was very similar to that in Prague (Austria Center, which is also a congress building).
Then Vienna is nearer for us Hungarian people than Prague.
Well, if tickets will cost 100 euros ore more I probably will have to quit on my dream to see him playing.

As I wouldn’t go alone but with a family member only the tix would cost quite a bunch of money (as my wage as a teacher is about netto 370 euros a month). Then the trip, which even by car costs quite a lot and on top comes the hotel.

I mean I paid 23 euros for Bonnie Prince Billy or 32 euros for a fantastic Ben Harper show in Amsterdam. Bob Dylan tickets for the show in Prague cost about 45 euros (the most exoensive ones). So, 120-150 euros for a concert is a bad joke.

Of course there’s lot’s of people that can afford that easily but especially in a country like the Czech Republic such prices are simply too high for the average people.

Of course it would be a great experience, though I think that TW’s management should have kept the prices quite a bit lower.

I mean it’s quite ridiculous that I have to work for more than a week to pay for a concert ticket :(

Though, I hope I’ll make it to the show somehow.

    Greetings

    Peter

  • 82 Bruce McClendon // May 24, 2008 at 9:56 am

I know he’s playing in Phoenix Park, Dublin, for three shows, but I read he’s playing in a large (4000 seat) tent. Is that true?

im a 17 year old student on less then low wage, living in norwich is a chore i thought hmm 100 miles to london ok suits me but paying to go to dublin or somewhere, this is crazy! Tom you grow up with little money so surely i thought you would know exacly what its like, i though i would never get to see my hero well now it turns out i might not, fuck it i try to stay out of moden music all the teco crap on the radio thats not really music, BUT AT LEAST THEY CAN TREAT THE FANS RIGHT!!!
looking up to waits for 8 years this hurts, why has Mr, Waits done this? he would be better off not having a tour and not upsetting a lot of people.

Howler fan to the end well tom thats not far now.

I’m still on the first screen…

  • 98 ro // May 26, 2008 at 12:57 am

got to love the french- all week they have had french and english translation non the site..now they only have french on the holding page…brilliant

as far as tomk tho- I hope they realise that some of these tickets in europe are actually almost half a months wages….(especially in the czech republic. (and again that is without travel costs which are more expensive in europe becasue we dont have subsidised gas)

It is unbelieveable that the us shows at $85 (about £45 ) are not sold out because people think it is too expensive- and yet the Euro shows are way more expensive and it is virtually empossible. I guess the Waits management knows his European fans get to see him so little that they will pay stupid money.
I guess he has to make his money, and i imagine he cares little about what we are all saying, but it is a dissapointment from someone who many have admired for a long time. The profit, even taking into consideration crew/travel/hotel costs is massive…

anti -scalping measure seems not ot be a measure to protect fans in europe. More like they saw how much people would pay touts for tickets and hiked the price accordingly.

  • 99 marten // May 26, 2008 at 12:57 am

Got one ticket for Paris - nearer than Edinburgh for me, even though I’m in the UK. I’ve got relations in Paris so I’ve got a place to stay too. Train from UK on Thursday, Thursday with with my relations, taking in the sights on the Friday, going to the gig Friday night - back home on the train on Saturday - bliss! Even though I’m on my own - Tom would’ve wanted it that way….

  • 144 Paddy // May 26, 2008 at 1:08 pm

I agree with the majority of the comments here, I can’t believe that the price of the tickets to the gig in Ireland are so much, I went to see Tom back in 04 in Hammersmith and I’m pretty sure flights and tickets didn’t come to that rip off price, Mr Waits shame on you, why are you looking after the fan in America by keeping the prices low and then making up for it by charging us that sort of price, also I don’t have credit card and my woman wouldn’t want to go but the set up that is going on here means that I’d have to get her to buy and ticket just so I could get in. this is just terrible, you can’t blame the touts as it’s not as if the tickets aren’t been sold. Boo Hoo take you tour and shove it!

  • 175 Ewan // May 27, 2008 at 2:28 am

I was told by ticketmaster (for the Edinburgh show) that tickets went on sale at 10am this morning, over the telephone and online.

I started calling at 09.55am and got through at 10.04am to be told that they only had restricted view seating left for the Sunday(still at £95 per ticket!) and that they only had a few non-restricted view seats left for the Monday show.

I just managed to get two reasonable tickets way back in the stalls for the Monday but this is crazy.

This venue takes approx 3000 people so there are 6000 tickets available over 2 nights. The call to ticketmaster took four minutes and they said they had 100 people working there this morning. It’s basic maths; even if the people who got through before me only took 2 mins on the phone each, there should only have been 400 tickets sold by this point (taking as read that everyone’s buying two).

So my question is WTF happened to the other 5600 seats in those 4 minutes? How is it possible that I can get through 4 minutes after the tickets have gone on sale and be asked for £210 for two seats where you can’t see the stage properly?

Don’t get me wrong - I’m so happy that I’m going to see him at all but something’s not right here. Did the tickets go on sale in advance somewhere? Obviously you’d think they’d been sold online but the website is still saying “tickets are not currently available”, as it has all morning, so that can’t be right.

Some websites did mention a 9am ticket sale time but I called ticketmaster in advance to check and they confirmed it was 10am.

I feel pissed off that I’ve made the decision to shell out a huge sum of cash because I’m terrified I’ll never get a chance to see him again but I don’t feel like there’s been a level playing field somehow.

Any ideas? Anyone know anyone who works at Ticketmaster who could shed some light?

  • 177 Despair // May 27, 2008 at 3:23 am

Probably went to all the sponsors who they also get money from for this tour. As mentioned before, this whole tour is just a bad joke.
Actually I hope that a lot of people get ill and then they find out that they cannot give their tickes to someoone else or sell them and do not get their money back and then will sue the organizers (since the European law clearly states that you always must have a chance to give your tickets to other persons or get the money back).
And Mr Waits playing for half empty venues would also be great - might teach him a lesson. Better no tour than this bad excuse for a tour.
Stay in the US, Mr Waits. You pissed of so many fans in Europe …

Jeez. Almost 200 posts of pure whining! Whats the matter with you people, face the reality: the touring plan is set, there will be no additional concerts. He’s playing 15 gigs in 20 days in Europe, what more can you ask for? He has sold tens of thousands tickets in no time. We are talking of Tom Waits here; how can you expect him to come to your doorstep and play for free? He played 8 gigs in Europe 4 years ago, and they sold out in no time. As far as I can remember, the tickets was about the same price then. It’s a pity of course that a lot of fans can’t afford to attend any of the concerts, but please don’t blame Tom Waits for this. I think he deserves every penny he earns, including his part of the 1000 euros I’m shelling out to see him live for the second time. It’s ridiculous to compare such an artist with Björk!! or any other artist. If you rather use your 120 euros to watch ANY mediocre artist twice, thats your choice, but you won’t have half the fun. Believe me.

@ Eoghan (188): I don’t think so… BTW, what the hell makes you think that there will be any need of a support act? ;-)

  • 193 BadgerBoy // May 27, 2008 at 12:15 pm

  • 194 tony moon // May 27, 2008 at 12:57 pm

OK Guys here’s the way i see it. I have been very lucky-Tom has played in London three times I have see him at each gig. At the last London show someone shouted from the audience -where had he been for the past sixteen years… nowadays getting to see him has become a circus. The last London gig was sold out in ten minutes. The tickets for the Hammersmith Apollo cost a healthy £65 (thats $120).Getting hold of them was like a military operation. From what I have read the glitter and doom tickets are even more. Frankly I love Tom like no one else but I’m out baby. The whole thing has become too fucking exclusive and too expensive. If you are going to tour tour if it is going to be for a real minority with the vast majority excluded really what is the point? There are larger venues that Tom could play at without compromising his credentials. Why the fuck don’t you check them out?

  • 195 James // May 27, 2008 at 1:59 pm

    :
Dear Anti (because Tom will never see this)

I know there have probably been several messages based on this subject but I felt the need to express my opinion and hope for a reply.

Me and my friend adore your music, we work in a bar and have constant conversations when its busy about how much of a legend Tom Waits is. It keeps us going through the hectic nights of working in a club bar that doesn’t play your genius music.

So when we found out you would be touring a few hours from Newcastle (where we live) we were over joyed. We worked to organise transport and accommodation near the gig. So when the news comes that you (Or anti) are charging near £100 for a ticket we were disgusted, a musician such as your self should have some credibility and not just play for the upper classes. I understand that if anyone reads this it will be a employee of Anti.

Tom Waits is not a legend he is just like everyone else that fails the fans.
Charging those prices is ridiculous, he/you doesn’t need the money. He makes the marvellous step of not just confing the UK leg of the tour to Europe he is moving elsewhere… but that wasn’t the great step me and my friend Jack had hoped for.

You have upset a young fan Mr Waits

I’ve been following Tom for 30+ years now…saw him when the Big Time tour came to London many years ago. Didn’t get the chance to see him in 2004 so am gutted that he’s not playing a London/England date and despite my love for the guy and his music I’m finding it hard to justify shelling out £400-500 to travel from the south coast to Edinburgh or Dublin. I’m also dissapointed in the price of the tickets compared to the U.S but not surprised….everything else is double the price so why not gig tickets!!!!! Come on Tom/Anti get real….

  • 199 Tituba // May 28, 2008 at 4:21 am

I like to believe that Tom will be on this pages sooner or later….

    So

Dear Tom, do you know that the ticket’s cost for the only italian date of your tour are from Euro 143 to Euro 103 ???
Do You think that this cost for a concert is too expansive, don’t you?
I’m so sorry for the comparison between you and a Rolex…I prefear my heartly comparison between your music and an ideal poetical jorney. So I don’t think that a poet, a musician, a painter, an artist therefore, have to die poor like Mozart or Loutrec died, but not even out of reach from the souls of people by the unreachability from their wallets! In fact I think that you doing Art with your music, and I think too that Art must be always reachable from all the people that fell it, not only from people that can pay for it.
Sorry for that sad outpour, sorry for my bad english, I’m only an italian poor fan of Tom Waits…

  • 200 CORMAC MCMULLAN // May 28, 2008 at 4:23 am

I wish people would calm down about the price of the tickets and stop blaming Mr Waits. I am from Dublin and we are constantly paying over the odds for gigs that cost far less in other countries and this is down to the premoters in Ireland. Over 4 years ago I saw the Rolling Stones in Prague, return flights and tickets to the gig were still cheaper than buying a ticket to see them in Dublin.
He hasnt played in Ireland for nearly 20 years, so I think he may have been due a return visit.
I am sorry for other fans who cant get to see him but he is only human after all and cant get to every country.
For those of you who have a ticket enjoy the gigs.

OMG, ain’t Tom coming to London this time? What a scandal! My, oh, my!

FIY, the last gigs in Scandinavia were Oslo and Copenhagen in 1985 and Stockholm in 1999. That’s twenty-four (24) and nine (9) years ago, respectively. Am I whining? Nope, I’ve been saving up since 2004, when I couldn’t afford the trip to see the Real Gone tour. This time, I’m going to Paris & looking forward to it.

  • 202 quidam quelconque // May 28, 2008 at 8:01 am

I got tickets for Paris. Got through fairly easily and the tickets for the Grand Rex seem to be a bit cheaper than Dublin, Edinbrgh etc (70 euros each, affordable, just). So you won’t hear too many complaints from me, but sympathy to everyone who couldn’t afford or get tickets.

One question - I had to use a friend’s visa to get the tickets as the french website wouldn’t take my card. As far as I can tell the gig in France doesn’t use the ticketmaster swipe card system (it’s not ticketmaster at all) but I’m worried that they will want the card holder to be there. Can anyone put an anxious man at ease and tell me everything will be dandy?

OK, another annoying question, but I would really appreciate some help…..

I was trying to get two tickets for Paris on the 25th (got them, yay!!!!) but accidently ended up with two for the 24th in my cart aswell. You could only empty the whole cart, not remove specific items, and out of fear I would lose all my tickets proceeded presuming I could return the 24th tickets.
I’ve been trying to ring the number given for European enquiries and it doesn’t work……any ideas how I can return these tickets? Absolutely no way I could afford both dates.

Also, for the 24th which I did not want to attend I have been told I have 2OR Range H tickets(sounds good??), but on the 25th it says Placement Libre, which I presume is unreserved? I payed top whack for both sets of ticket, so what is the difference? I will be coming from England after work so the thought of unreserved places fills me with fear - all the French people will get there first!

    Any help most appreciated.
(Don’t think for one moment this takes away from how excited I am to be finally seeing him!)

Is there anything, at all, I can do to either trade my tickets for the show on the 17th or get a reimbursement for the tickets I purchased?

  • 212 Kenny // May 28, 2008 at 12:45 pm

I eventually got two tickets for Edinburgh 12 miles away ‘
Astonished at the price though ,then I thought about it .

Neil Young was £65.00 for the same venue and Tom Waits has never in my opinion touched his album sales and had the exposure (Crosby stills ,etc,.)

My brother has tuned the occasional piano in that theatre ,concerts are few and far between now, it is used for musicals he my brother states that that theatre is not cheap but it has a fantastic sound quality.

30 miles along the road you have the multi purpose 8000 seater Secc in Glasgow which is cheap and cheerful but has applling sound quality,I explained to many that I would not go there to see another act including Tom Waits.

So he has decided to play Edinburgh for the first time in 21 yrs (I was there) and before then he was very loyal to that city, and before his last gig in London the previous gig was at the same time as the last Edinburgh gig.

Back to the price though and although I cannot fford it I am going, thousands won’t, but how many on this forum have happily cherry picked songs and albums from file sharing sites and also obtained pirate copies of Albums ,thus drying up the artists income.

One thing is for sure Tom Waits maybe decides the tour but I suspect he has little say over the price .

I hope that many people going are true fans and not the Celebrity crowd who want to be ’seen’ to be asiociated with a unique artist .

Having listened to him for 25 yrs I have won over about two fans out of hundreds to his music .

I ain’t never hired a hooker, but i seen enough that night to last me… Also saw some guy almost get his head taken off by a taxi while he was spewing into the gutter. Though getting stoned with other Waits fans, with Dylan on the stereo, overnight, outdoors, with beers, now thats a ticket queue. However, Sitting at my computer, bleery eyed and hungover at 10am, constantly hitting refresh until the stupid website released the tickets was about as much fun as having to shit into a small brown paper bag infront of a crowd. Poor. Oh, and on top of that, £208 for 2 tickets?! Thats $410!!!! For 2!!! Christ. Lucky its Tom, i wouldn’t pay that for anyone else, not unless the ticket came with a free Faberge egg, or spectacled bear, a Sumatran rhino or an author-signed copy of Origin of the Species…

The Board are currently looking to form a safety review group. As a fire safety committee is already in place, it is hoped to extend the duties of the fire safety committee so as to encompass all health and safety issues within the Board. The new Safety Review Group will meet at least once a month to discuss relevant health & safety issues within the organisation . If you wish to be a part of this review group, please respond to Patrick Cosgrave by email p.cosgrave@peanala.ie or by phone ext 247

    Dazed & Confused,

In response to your query, it seems to me that you can bring whomever you want to on your second ticket. Ticketmaster did not ask for their details. For tickets sold separately, you had to submit your own details. For those who bought two tickets ,you still only had to submit your own details. Hence, your main priority is to make sure that the lead seat (i.e.the buyer) matches the name on the passport/driving license. I know that conditions stipulated that i.d was required for the second ticket, however this is not the case. However ambiguous it all seems, Tom waits knew what he was doing, as he has been successful in beating the touts. Because when you think about it, for the tout to make money on the second ticket, the tout must go to the concert with the buyer of the ticket. Now that just doesn’t make any economic sense, especially when Touts only interest is money not music. All websites like needaticket.net and other ticket agencies haven’t even bothered selling them. Just finally think about it…..you arrive up to the entrance of the gig with your two tickets and receipt in your name, you also have the credit card used (this will be shown on the receipt) Once you have all these, the bouncers wont give a hoot who the second entrant is!!!!. It is when you arrive up with two tickets in the name of Mr. Smith, and your passport says Mr. Obekanyu & Mr Ranulfo…..that is when its obvious that they were resold by a tout. That’s what Waits/aiken are tying to stop with this system. And so far they have scared the touts off. SO FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE SECOND TICKET, DONT BE, JUST THINK ABOUT IT AND USE YOUR COMMON SENSE. I hope I have made sense!! Cheers eveyrone, cant wait for the gig myself

Has anyone managed to get a seating plan for the Grand Rex in Paris or figure out what the whole unreserved seating is about??

I need to decide what tickets to cancel and a seating plan would help!

    AARDVARK -
I emailed info@gdp.fr to request cancelling Paris tickets and got a reply from noam.tozy@gdp.fr telling me to contact him quickly if I wanted to cancel tickets.
You could try this too, should be OK.

BRUS MICHEL - Thanks for the number. Hopefully the email route will work so I wont have to use my rubbish French on the phone, but I appreciate the help!

  • 225 MARTIN // May 29, 2008 at 9:10 am

I sent an email to gdp three days ago and today i received a confirmation with a pdf with my seats.

At http://www.legrandrex.com you can find a plan,
click on le gran rex and then at the right click on “le grande salle”, there appears four pictures, the last one is the plan

Tom Waits does not set his own ticket prices. Cities do not magically contain reliable booking agents, suitable venues with open times or any other element of the delicate combination require to book a date, even if it’s your city.

It is not a personal slight when an artist cannot make it to your city. It could be for one of a hundred reasons.

If you want to pay a few thousand to fly him, the band, their equipment and their crew over, put them up for a few days, hire a suitable venue, hire the sound personnel, hire the PA equipment, list the show, buy ads and print up promotional materials, and pay for someone to distribute them, then you can set the prices yourself.

  • 227 Mr W // May 29, 2008 at 9:53 am

As followup to post 208, I have received a reimbursement for the show. That still leaves the problem of not getting to see a show at all. However, at least I am not unfortunate enough to be paying to see nothing. Thanks sincerely to any who shared my concern.

  • 228 Tessa // May 29, 2008 at 10:24 am

Martin - many thanks for pointing me in the direction of the seating plan. I also received a PDF so if all goes to plan and my other tickets get refunded OK I will be attending the Friday, Range I in the orchestra seats - happy with that!

Mr W - thank goodness you got your money back - would have seemed slightly illegal if that hadn’t been the case. I really hope you get some good fortune and manage to see a show.

i thank my lucky stars that i managed to get tickets for London in 2004 despite having to resort to a scalper on ebay…the new measures are welcomed but a shame no London gig after just the one last time. at least Edinburgh & Dublin get more than one show. yes the tickets are expensive but then still cheaper than a Madonna show if thats your thing, these days, gigs such as these are events & attract a price in keeping with it.

  • 244 waits ticket owner // May 30, 2008 at 2:47 am

Well. After missing the UK tickets, its easy to get Tuesday and Thursday mixed up right? hmmm…,

  • 245 Dan Kirk // May 30, 2008 at 7:12 am

  • 247 Brendan // May 30, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Johnny, the idea that Tom does not set the tcket prices is a tad naive. Are you saying that if it wasnt for those big bad promoters we would be seeing Tom for €10? Get real. What is the average salary in Prague? I see from a blog that a huge fan of Tom a teacher is on €390 a month and cant afford to go to Tom as the seats cost the equivalent of €130. Tom’s hobo shtick wears a little thin.

  • 248 yaaa // May 31, 2008 at 8:05 am

Ello! dont know muc h about tom waits but heard about his rip off tickects prices. Seems Mr Waits assumes that his fans revere and worship him so that he can rip them off, and they’ll take it gratefully-shame.
No matter how good his music is,he is still a musician, just a mortal being who shouldnt be ripping off the people who appreciate him the most.Funny, you’d think a seriously non mainstream artist, would be ‘all about the music and fans’

Emperors new clothes or what.Enjoy the show

  • 249 ab // May 31, 2008 at 6:12 pm

if ticket prices were lower the theatres would be full of fairweather fans who haven’t appreciated the man for a lifetime. i’m a hard up musician who has little work in the next two months. i’m selling a bass and an amp to fund a trip to every gig in edinburgh a dublin, because i’ve been a fan for the last 22 years and have only had the chance to see him once (hammersmith ‘04). i was a student the previous tour decided i couldn’t afford it and regretted it for 17 years. anyone who was at hammersmith four years ago (which cost me about the same as it is costing me to go to five gigs this time) will tell you the last thing you will be thinking about on the night is money. everyone else can sit at home and moan! true fans will be there this time!

  • 250 Peter Olah // May 31, 2008 at 11:14 pm

As a reply to post 248. I’m that mentioned teacher :) A live in Hungary and yes, my salary is a bit of a joke but what can I do? But you really made a good point though :)

Anyhow, after struggling for one day I finally couldn’t resist an bought a ticket (the cheapest for appr. 40 euros) for the Prague show on July 21 :) I talked to my family (that is my parents and aunty and uncle) and they said they would like to visit Prague anyway so we could combine the concert with a bit of sightseeing.

I was very happy about that because the trip and accomodation would have been too big expenses for me alone.

Well, I’ll be sitting quite in the back on the balcony but it should be all right and I will see Tom Waits for the first time in my life!

I’ve only been a fan for about 7 years but since then I bought all of his albums and became a huge admirer of him.

So everything’s fine for me in the end :)

    Cheers

    Peter

Spain´s a bit of a disaster. On the phone all day (no tickets on sale via internet from this ticket outlet although they do have this service for other acts) and finally got a ticket for the Kursaal in Donosti/ San Sebastian at 2:45 pm . My boss is a bit pissed off seeing as I hogged the phone and did no work for 5 straight hours. Well now he knows there´s worse things than having your workers call in sick on you.Still though, the company awarded the management of ticket sales for Spain could have done alot better

  • 255 gin // Jun 2, 2008 at 8:25 am

@Harry: the same for me; from 9.00 MET on the phone till now and i still haven’t tickets. I dind’t count, but i’d say, i phoned 600 times more or less.

“… ticket sales for Spain could have done alot better” is kind of a strong euphemism. The question is ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ how could they manage to do worse ??? Well, i don’t know.

  • 256 Harry Hoodunnit // Jun 2, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Gin They don´t seem to have the people to service the demand which, when you think about it, might not be that bad after all coz when the initial rush blows over there should still be tickets left. I was lucky I had access to a decent phone that redials within half a second and after various furious half hour bouts of hitting the button repeatedly I finally got through. Keep trying and good luck

The first towns where Tom is going to play in Europe are in Spain, but the Ticket Service decided that they should be the last to put the tickets on sale… They also decided that the tickets could only be bought by phone, and no online… Nice decisions.

I am Portuguese, and I am going to see the Man, even if I have to rob a bank (and I might have to do it…).
The less expensive place to see Tom, fo me, is Barcelona (and I will spend more or less 500 Euros, to do it - ticket, plain and hotel… forget food). I am trying to call the f***** Teleentrada since 8.00 am (9.00 in Spain), to get some nice places (for this price, I should be sitting ON Tom…), but, after 2 hours of hearing the messages “The nunber you dial is no correct”, and trying to enter the site, that was not working, I can now hear a voice that answers my call, but it says to me “Our operaters are to busy, right now, please call us later” (and I have to pay the call). Amazing.

I really need to buy the tickets, so that I can book the plain and the hotel…
Why aren’t the spain tickets on sale online? Why only now?
Why do I have to pay fo a call that does’t aswer me?
    Why????
I am going to see Tom Waits, even if I have to kill someone, but I never expected that it would be this hard.
And I hope he knows how much we are doing to see him, so that he understands how f****** special he is…

I have to see on my accont, if they tooke the money, and trust tha on 14 July, the tickets I will get, wiil be the same thati paid for… Really a great service, they have…

  • 275 Carl // Jun 4, 2008 at 3:30 am

I’ve wasn’t too quick off the mark getting a ticket, but as I’m staying in Prague I just got one of the ‘cheaper’ tickets at about £30, but this maybe obscured sighting - (There are still cheap and top range tickets, (£100) available) - The question I want to ask is, do artists like TW and others think about the relative wages outside their home country? The tickets here are twice those of the states, but the average income is less than half - Ex-pats, the middle class, big fans and the well-to-do criminal classes will attend, but what of the average Czech or neighbouring fans from Slovakia, Poland etc - IF TW were to play in India, Bangladesh or Honduras for example, would the top tickets be £100-$200 because the tour is expensive to set up??

    Dear Sirs,

I am not quite sure if this is the correct adress to send this to, but I trust you will answer me or forward this to the right person.

A week ago my husband and I finally managed to get tickets to one of Mr. Waits concerts in Europe. SInce he is not coming to Norway our alternative was Edinburgh. I have been waiting 25 years to see him in concert!

My sister-in-law paid for the tickets with her creditcard, and we booked hotelroom and flights (and kennel lodgings for our dog) the same day.

Then, last Friday we got the sad message that due to the fight against the black marked tickets, the person who paid for the tickets (my sister-in-law) and a guest are the only ones that can attend. We tried to call and to explain the situation by e-mail, but the only thing we know is that is not possible to change the name on the tickets. This means that nobody can use them, and we want event get the ticketcost refunded.

At the same time we see that ticket scalpers earn their money because they will always find a way to get around the system, but we have lost a fair amount of money and we will not be able to see Mr. Waits in concert due to some rigid system.

Looking at Mr. Waits official homepage, several people are experiencing this, and I therefore hope that something will be done about this.

I understand your frustration about the black market, but this kind of system only affects his fans.

Terribly disappointed in Tom Waits. Fair dues to him for insisting on the system to stop the touts ripping off the real fans but what a hypocrite for setting the prices at e130 for the gigs in Dublin. With credit card charge etc. that’s nearly e140. I cant believe I can use their names in the same sentence but this stinks of the Barbara Streisand gig in Ireland last year. Not a fan of her music myself but they set her prices at e200+. This just attracts the society snobs that pay the crazy overpriced costs just to tell people at their latest dinner party that “oh yes of course i was at the tom waits concert the other night, what music fan wouldn’t be. I think he really said all he had to say on Closing Time”. What a load of crap. Once again real music fans ripped off again and dont give me that shit about it being the agency. Everything Tom Waits has done in his career he has, admirably, demanded full control over so do not tell me he has nothing to do with this.

At least it was our choice to pay for overpriced tickets to touts instead of it being the default price. Steve Earle selling his songs to drinks ads, Bod Dylan advertising cars and selling cds through Starbucks and now this. Disgusted. Absolutely disgusted.

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=17775647638

I thought it would be good to have a real group where we can break the conversation into different threads rather than just post everything on the same page. And I’ll create a thread for the “anti-scalping system” as well, so that we can keep all the music-related threads as tidy as possible.

I just saw him in Houston. First, he has to play a large venue, otherwise lots of people would not be able to see him. And then the venue spikes up the price of the ticket. Second, he is close to 60 years old and his concert lasted almost 2 and a half hours!!!! It was an amazing experience!!! I mean, it is no wonder why he cannot do this often!!! I have seen so many older performers that only go through the motions to finish the gig, but Tom had an amazing performance… And his coat was soaking wet. Face it guys, he is OLD and he cannot have normal tours often and keep up the quality.

  • 304 Meg // Jun 23, 2008 at 9:56 am

Is anyone absolutely certain that the card-holder has to attend the gig? I don’t possess my own credit card so I bought 2 tickets to go see him in Edinburgh on my mother’s credit card with the intention of bringing my younger sister…

Can someone let me know if both attendees have to be named on the tickets or is it just the buyer ? Thanks

  • 306 Adrian // Jul 2, 2008 at 7:14 am

To whomever makes the decisions where to tour: Prices arent the issue for us in Australia, we worry about time. I have no problem setting aside money which I cannot afford nor rationally justify to experience Tom Waits in the flesh, but at over 60, and with it being 25+ years since he came anywhere near Australia, I fear my (his) time is running out. To all the spolit brits with their inflated sense of self entitlement, dont whine about it being 4 years since he was last in London- grow up. You really dont appreciate how lucky you are. Tom/promoters/ANTI: charge $500 a ticket if you need to, just make an Australian tour happen.

Hey, I got tickets for the Edinburgh show, but I am not sure where exactly I’m supposed to be sitting. Could anyone else shed some light for me. I can’t tell from the seating plan. I paid £95 for it and the seat is in the:

Stalls section, Row T, Seat 49

I can’t seem to figure out where it is on the seating plan. Could anyone please tell me! I don’t want to be right at the back.

I’ts my first concert ever and I apologise for the ignorance!

  • 308 Cagee // Jul 8, 2008 at 8:17 pm

I saw the July 5 show in Atlanta, GA USA. Ticket selling process requiring ID/Credit Card/Limit two tickets the same here. We have been through this process the last two times we have seen him and have no problems with it. Our tickets, lower level, 25 rows back in the best musical venue Atlanta has cost us only $85 US. We were glad to pay it to get to see this performance. It was worth twice the price. Compared to the Eagles fourth farewell tour selling at $140 to $250 US this is a DEAL. Who wants to see the Eagles anyway? And what makes some of these bands think anyone wants to pay that kind of money to see them anyway. Maybe by the 5th or 6th farewell tour the prices will come down. I still won’t waste my time to see them. But come on folks - stop the whining. Whatever you are having to go through to get tickets, whatever you are having to pay for them, it is WORTH IT. THIS WAS THE BEST SHOW I HAVE SEEN FROM TOM WAITS IN THE PAST 30 YEARS AND THE BEST SHOW FROM ANYONE IN QUITE A WHILE. I can’t think of anything I would drop everything for to get the opportunity to see again and again and again. So quit complaining and enjoy!

  • 313 Leslie // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:55 am

I’ve got tickets for Edinburgh.Living in the North of England the nearest venue I could have hoped for is Manchester. The reality is that if you want to be guaranteed to see a performer close to where you live you’ve got to catch them young.I’ve been waiting to see Tom Waits perform for twenty five years so the trip to Edinburgh will hopefully be worth the effort. But the anti-scalping plans are a bit of a joke.I wanted to take my wife and 15 year old son.Due to the two ticket rule he’s going to miss out and I don’t know whether this chance is going to come around again. At least the rule means the tickets get spread around, but I’ve just seen something on the Ticketmaster website that suggests some tickets are going to be put up for auction. What’s that all about?

  • 314 Pierre // Jul 9, 2008 at 6:23 am

Please a swiss show…. in 20 years, I never had any occasion to see Tom Live.

    too bad

  • 315 Olraindog // Jul 9, 2008 at 12:03 pm

Time to stop all the complaining folks, if you’re a fan you do what you have to do to go see him. The last two tours I have flown to Memphis, and to Atlanta and I live in California. Those aren’t cheap trips, but they are well worth the money. His shows are truly a unique experience, and traveling to a far off place adds to the enjoyment. He gives you at least two years to save up, so if you’re physically able, make it part of your vacation, or whatever you have to do, just see him and stop crying about where, when and how much.
In regards to Tom not going to Scandinavia, he tried, but Norway turned him down. And far as London is concerned, it was you who were given the special treatment during the Real Gone Tour right?. So quit the bitching okay? This is Tom Waits, not the Stones or some other mega sized band, he plays intimate venues at fair prices not sports arenas where you may get a cheap ticket, but you’re stuck in a crapper nose-bleed seat.
To all those fortunate enough to see him on the second leg of this tour, you are in for one hell of a treat! The band was just getting warmed up here in the states, so enjoy, they are going to blow you away.

Saw TW in Jacksonville on 1st July. When admitted, I just gave the ticket person my credit card I had booked my tickets with but my ID was not checked. On that basis, you may be able to get away with just presenting your Mum’s borrowed credit card. Good luck!!

    In response to Molly;s post:
In the US, just the buyer’s name had to be disclosed so you can take anyone you like.

To everyone who gets tickets:enjoy!! I hadn’t seen him since the London shows in ‘87 and was blown away.

If you think the tickets are too expensive, you’re living in the past. His shows are worth it.
Otherwise, stay home and listen to Raindogs.

I recently caught my first ever TW show. We traveled very far & quite expensively to get there with no less than 1 traffic violation & a missed plane flight. I CANNOT believe that some of you have the audacity to complain about him only doing things the way he wants to. He his a sight to behold & we should all be happy he even has come out to entertain us.

  • 324 Cagee // Jul 11, 2008 at 8:59 pm

In response to Leslie’s question about Tom Waits tickets being auctioned, not happening. It is just a function of the Ticketmaster site for any tickets you buy there. Tom Waits tickets do not use this function of the Ticketmaster site. I checked it out because I was curious too. There weren’t any out there. Also, I am very sorry you didn’t think of buying your third ticket for your son using you wife’s name and credit card. You may not have gotten tickets sitting together, but here in Atlanta not many people sat. There is a fairly good sized area at the back of the floor-level seating and wide aisles leading to the floor seats. This turned into the dance floor. We were 25 rows back, but we stood in the far right aisle beside the floor seats for the last hour of the show and ended up on the front row by the encore. Next time - and I think all of us can’t wait until it comes - buy two with one credit card under your name and credit card and buy the other under another name and card. As long as the two people who purchased the tickets show up to claim them you can take a total of four people. Get your son to see Tom next time around. I am just very sorry he didn’t make this performance. It was beyond anything I have ever had the good fortune to see.

Think about us poor saps in Japan. I wait patiently…

  • 326 Itziar // Jul 12, 2008 at 1:42 am

Well, imagine having Tom Waits coming to your own small city (San Sebastian) once in a lifetime and having no chance whatsoever to get a ticket no matter the price. The ONLY way to buy tickets was one single phone line that opened at the same day and hour for both concerts in SS and Barcelona. The phone number was permanently busy for three days and no one that I know off -and I know quite a few TW fans around here- could get through, nor, of course, get hold of a ticket. (The ticket-office does exist, which I doubted at the time, I just called for a last desperate try, failed of course ).
So, I not only feel very disappointed, but simply cheated. Please, give us back our good old lining ups for the night, at least there we had a REAL chance of going to the concert!

Just curious why the official website still lists Larry Taylor as the bassist for this tour? The upright Bassist is Seth Ford-Young. The original press release had the horn player as “yet to be named”, but it has been corrected to show the name as the wonderful Vincent Henry. Hopefully the same honor can be bestowed for the young man holding it down on bass since Larry Taylor was unable to make it for this tour.

It just helps when you may be the source for the names of band members when reporters and fans write about the musicans on the web.

    Thanks, and kind regards!

I think I know why Tom didn’t visit London this time. From what I can tell you’re a bunch of whining pussies. If you want to see Tom then do whatever you have to do to see him. Get on a train or plane or whatever you’ve gotta do and just go. I drove 1000 miles, one way, to see him in Mobile, Alabama and that was AFTER I had already seen him in Cleveland, Ohio. Oh…and I also saw him in Birmingham…..hahahahaha! Bottom line….I did WHATEVER I HAD TO DO to get to these shows. I’m not rich but I know when to spend the bucks for something that’s a rare occurance. If you can’t afford to do that then shut the fuck up and deal with it. Life aint fair and if anyone told you that it would be they were lying.

Thanks, Hoistthatrag for the web link - great site, very interesting. Can;t wait to see the man in Paris - looks like the set is covering a number of my favourites and that the band is absolutely cooking. At first I was disappointed that Marc Ribot wasn’t touring, but I’ve seen him with various outfits anyway. Glad the debate is switching from tickets to the music at last!!
    Cheers, Whatshe building, etc

Mercy on you, those who can not see mr. Waits live…! My story goes from the very same second I started calling to get tickets until now, yet….
My pals and I got the 27th Row in Barcelona…. right infront of the (what’s it called?) sound-control tables…….so, I complained, but they said it was already planned to move us right away…. I said we are seating together, the four of us…. They said, no problem, FOLLOW ME….. So, we did,……….going down, down, down….down………….And when the guy said seat down here (in these four free seats) in the FIFTH ROW………..we would just get stuck to it……. and I thought to myself no one is gonna move me from here no way…… and so we all four thought so, mr. waits microphone was right infront of my nose…. so, it definetely couldn’t be true, althought I thought I had pay for sure for a first row ticket, I couldn’t help thinking everybody behind me had so too……….
    and there we would stay……
just one thing: mr. waits made me move from my seat and he was the only one who could have done that……..
believe me when I say mr. waits would cough, we would go crazy…….. too long waiting…..(!!!!!!)

A-MA-ZING show in Milano last night!!!!! It was worth the trip from California - What a performance! What a band! What a great audience!
BTW, I was seated very close to Roberto Benigni and his wife! He is such a nice & funny guy! And guess what song Tom dedicated to him?
    Uhhhhh….
Can’t wait for tonight and tomorrow (yes, I am lucky enough to have tickets for all 3 Italian concerts!!!!)….. See ya there,

Really fantastic performance yeasterday night in Milan!! Very good set list and audience.
I enjoyed particularly HANG DOWN YOUR HEAD, DIRT IN THE GROUND, I’LL SHOOT THE MOON, YOU CAN NEVER HOLD BACK SPRING - written for the film “La Tigre e la Neve” of Roberto Benigni - who was in the auduence.
A lot of musicians also in the audience. Also Lorenzo Bertocchini (his version of OL’55 is here: http://www.myspace.com/lbap).
Was it 2 of Tom’s sons in the band at the end?
I knew about Casey, but I think there is another one…. (percussion adn horns)
    Anyway, great night!!!
    CIAO!
    Max

P.S.: Tom joked about everybody in Milano saying to him all day: “Tom, vadaviaiciapp”! It means “f*!k off” in milanese dialect! Hahahaaaa….

The joke at 4′10” in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQSuYtYY4hw (Milano - first night)…

Tom said something like: “All day long, people on the street, in the hotel lobby, in taxi cabs, etc. have been coming up to me and saying: ‘Tom, vadavia-i-ciapp’… What is it? Something like ‘Volare’?… Or maybe ‘Welcome to Milan’?”…

Well….. “vadavia-i-ciapp”, in milanese dialect means “vai a dare via le chiappe” (Italian), which could be translated as “Go give your ass away”… Or simply “Fuck you”.

    Tom, vadaviaiciapp!
    I am still laughing!!!!

I’m sorry to say… I saw the 2:nd gig in Prague, and yes Tom is greate, but the songs he chose surprised me allot. The balance wasn’t really there, I missed some “given” song from the atmosphair created.
The sound was not mixed very well and reached the public poorly. Overall I would give the concert a 7 out of 10. A bit dissapointed… :(

    Linda is near right.

I’ve seen both gigs in Prag, and of course i loved them. But i loved them, because i love him, which makes me accept some things, i would normally be angry about.

First of all the distance to him was way toooo far. I sat in row 6 and 4! which is quit near “normally”. But not in prague, where they spared about 20! meters of the stage just as a kind of invisible barriere. I think that was one of the points that made it difficult to feel like your “in” the show. It was a little like watching TV, so far he was. I dont want to imagine how far it was in the hundrets rows behind me. The choice of the concess centre was a really bad one, and i hope they never make this failure again. Its much too big for a Tom Waits concert.

And Linda is also right when it comes to the mixing. The second show was even worse mixed then the first. And how the fuck can that happen? Why didnt they learned from their first gig failures.

But -god thanx- i am too addicted to tom waits, that i could oversee this problems after a while and dive into the “unspeakably breathtaking sakra-good” show.

I loved the songs and i think the balance was perfect (especially at the second gig, where the piano songs didnt sound like ” i played them thousand times before”). Not to mention the spectacular final song with some glitter in it.

Let it rain, really really rockt!

(does anybody made a picture of the “rain” and would send it to me. I would highly apprecciate it.)

So for me, its was one of THE shows since years and i cant wait to see him again…

(and damn yes, i even touched him with my finger, and found myself happy like a 14 year old girl crying out for her boygroup idol)

  • 439 federico // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:22 am

La scaletta pesca qua è là dagli oltre 35 anni di carriera, rispolvera classici come “Tom Traubert’s blues”, “On the nickel” e “Innocent when you dream”, coinvolge il pubblico nella recentissima “Lie to me”, trasforma in versione jazz la cupa “Dirtin’ the ground”, dedica a Benigni “You can never hold back spring”, soundtrack del film “La tigre e la neve”, schizza tra il blues di “Black market baby”, le suggestioni mitteleuropee di “November” e “Misery is the river of the world” e le country ballads di “Hang down your head” e “Hold on”, si lascia innaffiare da una pioggia di lustrini sul finale di “Make it rain”.

  • 441 Christoph // Jul 24, 2008 at 5:17 am

I saw the second gig in Prague and I’m really disappointed. The sound quality wasn’t very good and the music was surprisingly soft. (I couldn’t say this for any other “rock concert” I’ve ever seen…)
For me the show was too static and most of the time I missed the live-character. There were a few highlights - “Make it rain” was definitely the best version I’ve ever heard of this song - but all in all the concert wasn’t very exciting and not worth to travel from Hamburg to Prague for just one night, as I did.

As a Tom Waits enthusiast I’m sorry to say this. And I hope to enjoy a better show next time - as I did in Berlin 2004.

I was at the third concert in Milano. Tom was great, and I also liked the chosen songs and the musicians. Great atmosphere, beautiful arragements. I was in Firenze in 1999 too, and I’m very happy to have seen him twice. But I must say this: bad organization, the volume was really really low. The sound was not bad, but I can’t understand how, after the two first concerts, the sound eingeneer did’nt correct the volume. Hey guys, you need a couple of ears? Fort that price I’d like to hear fine and strong!!!!!!!

I’m sooo looking forward to the Friday Night Dublin gig as I haven’t seen Tom since he played here back in 1987 in the Olympia theatre in Dublin and wow was that a memorable gig.

I have a particular request though and I can’t seem to find out how to channel this directly to Tom or his tour manager! When he is in Dublin I would like him to visit a charity that I work for who work in the area of drug and alcohol addiciton. I know that such a visit would be a great opportunity to get PR for the organisation, now in it’s 35th year and would help us in our ongoing quest to secure funding and grant aid .

Can anyone advise on the best course of action?

Hi I was lucky enough to see Tom on the 2nd night in Prague-what a show -what a city. I was so excited -it was like waiting for Santa and you didnt have to have a sleep!! I was in row eight with my wife (Who now thanks to Tom has said I can buy beer!!) and the sound and atmosphere were great.
What a talented bunch of musicians wow .Are the Waits the new Von Traps!!
Gig in a million - Top song “Misery is the River of the world” .
Any rumblings about a live cd/dvd for those lucky to be there and those who couldnt make it for whatever reason!!
freebird I too was at the Olympia in 1987-this show is better -that I Know is a big call. Hang on to your Socks!!!

  • 446 freebird // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Wow better than 87?…….. now I’m really excited. Getting reports as I write from a friend who is at the gig in Paris tonight and he says its awesome….I know I shouldn’t wish away my life…..but I wish it was Friday :-) Rock on Tom !

Given the ticket scams prevalent on the Leonard Cohen tour, all hats off to Tom Waits for trying to scalp the scalpers!

Does anyone have the set list from yesterday show in Paris ?
Being there, was like finally receiving a christmas treat kept away for sooo long ! It was really really great.
Hey Mr, you should come again to Paris France ! We - rude and washing cars with underwears people - screamed the Grand Rex out last night !

  • 452 emma // Jul 25, 2008 at 6:56 am

as long as you are wearing those underpants it’s ok though!
what a splendid gig, the best ever. well worth traveling from england and 2 sleepless nights. Mr waits…you are my hero.

also after the set list… anyone?

  • 453 Bernard // Jul 25, 2008 at 7:34 am

I was at the Paris show yesterday (07/24).

And I regret one thing now…Having being so stupid that I did not buy a ticket for the second show as well!

This was a wonderful 2 h 1/4 long experience. I have been listening Tom for years now and saw hin in concert only twice (first time was same place 8 years ago!)
    This is much too rare!

I got this ‘transportation feeling’ before only after some Bruce SPRINGSTEEN concerts. Tom WAITS should follow his example and tour more often.

Thanks to this full artist (song writting, music, show, lighting, atmosphere, story teller, …).

I will add that the quality of this theater (sound, setting) helped making this concert a ‘perfect’ one.

  • 454 Whatshebuildinginthere? // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:35 pm

Last night in Paris was great Bristol to Paris by Train & Eurostar and back in 24 hours, with a few beers and a top gig to boot! Thought the band were fantastic. Some good laughs on eyeball kid, with syncopated eye throwing!

  • 455 Whatshebuildinginthere? // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:37 pm

tom waits hadn’t gone to florida, usa. for 30 years. and he just made it. and it was amazing. fuck you guys. enjoy what you got. I waited a lifetime to see him. He’ll be back. and if that’s not enough, suck it up and pay the price. that’s what the man demands. if you don’t agree, listen to nighthawks at the diner again. peace.

I bought my tickets at a Ticket Master agents and I was asked for MY NAME ONLY!!! As were all the folks in front of me. However, I booked for the first Dublin night, I don’t want to be the first person to present with the problem - My buddy (my +1) does not share my surname!!! We’ve been listening for nearly 20 years! Please say I can get him in with the tickets I PAID FOR!!!

  • 460 Mr.ben // Jul 26, 2008 at 1:40 pm

There was no big control on the tickets at the entrance . I went with my wife . Picked up the tickets at 3PM at the Rex had to show my ID got my tickets . At the entrance they didn’t ask for an ID

  • 461 Lucinda // Jul 26, 2008 at 2:04 pm

first, I hate people complaining that the tix are overpriced, and about concert locations (btw, loved that european “constellation” :) .. tickets in prague were pretty affordable…anyhow, if you really appreciate an artist, youll put some money aside, skip this years “bikini” vacation or wherever..and go and see this unique artist…
I agree with some who say that this ticket system is great.
I saw 2nd night in Prague show, and I absolutely loved it!! Tom Waits is amazing entertainer and artist!

Good afternoon TO WHATSHEBUILDINGINTHERE….you were right old chap, i did have my days arse about face…. it was straight of eurostar friday (25) to htl then on to gig via various bars for an almighty example of showbiz oh so rarely seen these days…whad a guy!!!….there was a part of the show when Tom used that gutteral wail then straight into a falsetto that sent shivers down my spine…..ok he never played “walk away” but this will be remedied at the DUBLIN show on the 31st…or it better have, or i`ll have him, all the best people…hip! hip! for Tom…i love you all….p/s by the way, i was the extremely handsome blonde man 10 rows from front who all the women were giving admiring glances` to, marvelous………..DICK

  • 465 Whatshebuildinginthere? // Jul 27, 2008 at 9:37 am

    Hi Dick

Glad you made it to the show - you had me worried. I was there on thursday and thought it was great. Enjoy Dublin. Mrs Whatshebuildinginthere only lets me out once a year so one gig’ll have to do!

    Cheers

  • 466 Tessa // Jul 27, 2008 at 11:42 am

D - If you are attending the gig with your friend there will be no problem. I think for America you had to name your +1, but not so in Europe. Me and my boyfriend have just got back from seeing him in Paris and both tickets had my name on, as I was the person who booked them and I wasn’t asked for anyone elses name. As long as I was there with my ID/confirmation it didn’t matter.

PS - Best gig of my life, exceeded expectations and so much more. Have an amazing time.

Kris - Paris setlists are here http://eyeballkid.blogspot.com/

I envy you guys in Scotland and Ireland now, you are in for such a treat :))
Oh, yes, people, stop whining. Only Aussies and Asians have that right, everyone else, spoiled… I mean I had no idea Scotland was so out of reach for the English , or Prague for Germans…

The reason there’s no London date is because Waits hates the city, for an artist of this calibre the extra expense is worth it. You guys get enough exlusives that we have to travel for already.

First night of European Tour in Edinburgh,Scotland for Tom last night and it was magical. After,(like many people here in Scotland)20 years wait Tom came back,no London,No Manchester,ONLY Edinburgh in the whole of the UK and he performed material from his 40 year career, from Invitation to the Blues to Hoist that Rag.A show of approximately 2 and a half hours we were spoiled by everything he performed.Ticket prices were a shock initially but that just paled into insignificance.Tom is musically brilliant and highly innovative, eccentric, funny and completely individual. How many artists can you say that about nowadays? Worth every penny,Cheers Tim.

The price of a ticket been too high?? depends on how high a privilage you think it is to see the great man. How many insignificant nights out have you had spending the same amount be it in one, two or more nights?? Going to a bar, club etc spending on a night out you will never remember. I fully expect to remember wednesday nights show in Dublin for the rest of my life. Put it in perspective kids! Would you begrudge paying €130 to see Jesus?? Even a chocolate Jesus? You’ll have the rest of yer lives to spend money on mundane things. I await Wednesday night the same way, hell more than I did for Christmas day when I was 6. Now that’s something that’s a waste of money. We should have Tom instead of Christmas. Sorry Jesus, yer vibes good but yer music’s shite.

  • 483 Pete // Jul 28, 2008 at 3:06 pm

    Just got back from Edinborough.
Sunday 7am bus late hit a dog
8am, Nottingham, naked man roaming the streets with a tatoo of Tyne bridge above his backside. Station no train, use a bus, “But I’ve got to connect to Edinborough” - “You might, Just…” Not good enough, this is a once in a lifetime… Train back on. Skipping down the platform. Make connection. Family of Waitsians get on at York reading “Innocent…” My luck is in? Daddy falls asleep. Wakes and spills coffee over me, my shirts the colour of a … My lucks out?
Edinborough, lost, hills, wrong way down Princes St burning head and feet. Venue to meet contact. Hundreds of men in boots outside. Fun with the drag queens, I swear you could tell. Fidgety. Then there were three: a woman from Paris, a cockney and fuming Manc. Cockney goes for a drink with woman Manc goes back to hotel. Pub with pick up band and, as I raise my red sore head, a picture on the wall of Tom. Walk home in the graveyard fog. Next day Impressionists at the gallery. Long train home. Wrong way at connection. Nottingham bus is full…
Was it worth it? No, because the so and so who was to meet me with my ticket never turned up. I was 100 yards from touching the frayed hem of his suit, and couldn’t. Can you imagine? Can you imagine?

played. We are all fans, except Major Daft-Trousers

We beg of you Sir to play Walk Away as suggested
by the lowlife oick taxi driver Dick Scratcher. We
will be in Dublin on the 31st July.
Failure to comply with this request, nay order
will incur the displeasure of Her Majesty’s 1st

What a fantastic gig on Sunday night. Worth every penny of the £95 I paid (especially when you consider there are people out there who will pay almost double that to watch Maddonna mime).

Anyone with thickets for Dublin is in for a treat. I almost wish I had bought tickets for Sunday and Monday.

As an Edinburgh resident can I just add how refreshing it is to be able to see someone of that stature without having to incur the expense of travelling to London or it’s surrounds. After shelling out a fortune earlier in the year for Morrissey at the roundhouse only for him to cancel followed by a similar fortune for JAMC there I was delighted when it turned out Tom was playing Edinburgh. He didn’t disappoint.

  • 493 Lord Fatty // Aug 4, 2008 at 3:17 am

JUST BRILLIANT! Went to the last Dublin gig and never seen anything, that even comes close. 2,5 h of pure magic. I don’t know if i can go to a gig by anyone else anymore? Tonite i’m going to see Kris Kristoffersson in Helsinki, so let’s see?

Thank you Tom+Band for setting the standard, what a great concert should be. Musical brilliance , heartfelt presence, brilliant comedy and being able to move the audience to a place, where heartbreak, salvation and pure joy of being there meet.

If you want to see Tom Waits, a musical god… sell your leg to science, murder your friend for the money, break into the show, rob a bank, steal a car.

    If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way.
